We did a registry at Bed Bath and Beyond, my opinion

Lucky me, on October 30, 2012 at 9:57 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

So I first had the sales associate call me a few weeks before asking when I wanted to come in. I told her the date and she said "Do you want an escort to show you around the store?" I really did not want that because me and FH are pretty easy going and know what we like. I talked with her for a bit and she was very friendly and suggested that she do the escort. She sounded fun, so I caved in. We went Saturday to register, she asked where we wanted to start I said with the silverware. I went to look at reasonably priced silverware and she begins to go into this spiel about how we should register for expensive and non expensive items for everything because since I work at a hospital I know they'll spend big! I was like "No, we do not live our lives like that". She kept going on and on about it and finally FH was very stern and said "She said no, that's not how we work, we want people to afford our gifts not break a bank". After that she did not pressure us into anything....cont

But I was still annoyed. She was helpful for the big items and knowing whats better such as cookware but after that we could' ve been on our own just fine. I was too nice and didn't know how to tell her to leave lol. We ended up not finishing half the registry because she talked so much that 3 hours later we were just too tired. She asked if we would come back in and I said "yeah maybe". Really no lol. I will finish it on line or BY MYSELF. So overall, it was an ok experience but I would recommend telling the escort that you only want her for the cookware and vaccuums then you want to be on your own.

They have to make something because she kept showing us items and saying "I got this as an incentive and love it!"

My experience at Bed Bath & Beyond was different. I was a walk-in and the girl that helped me was great! She asked me if I wanted to go around by myself or if I wanted help (of course I needed help!) and then she was super helpful. I think I sent about 2 or 3 hours in there because she went over everything with me! She didn't pressure me into registering for certain things and she told me to mix it up (so I picked some expensive, some middle, and some cheaper priced items). I loved it!

Sorry you had a poor experience. We registered with BBB and did everything online -no trip to the store needed!!

It's good to pick diverse gifts in all different price ranges!

It wasn't that the experience was bad, I just think for us we didn't need an escort. Once we told her we weren't doing an expensive and inexpensive registry she was fine. It just made the experience a lot longer than it needed to be and now we aren't done!

You know... thats a shame because we actually had really nice guy show us around. He took us through a lot of things and he helped us when we had specific questions. Things like "Does this sheet set fit over our 18'' mattress?" and "Which of these knives has the best consumer ratings?" Things like that. And when we'd had enough and we wanted to start adding out things on our own, we just said "Ok Jack, thanks for the help!"

Im sorry you didnt have a good time though.

I basically had the same experience, but we spent a good 2+ hours talking in her office before we actually got to look for anything. We asked if we could go arounf on our own and she said no. By the end i was so frusterated I was almost in tears! We only added like 5 items to our registry then left, I later deleted most of these. We did the rest online!

I had a really similar experience, our escort didn't even let my FH talk! I kept asking for his input on things and a few times she just said "here this is the best one, scan this" and was kind of pushy. We ended up going online the next day and getting rid of/swapping things out. We just did kitchen stuff and it took us 3 hours. We thought about going back for when we start registering for bedding and home stuff but it was just so exhausting I may just do that all at Target.

Overall she was sort of helpful but more frustrating.

Holy crap! 3 hours! We were only there for an hour. But it was really busy and I think they were short staffed. Plus it was Sunday and FH was getting antsy to watch football and I think she figured that out. Our sales person was really helpful though. We had done our bedding and entertaining stuff at Pottery Barn so really all we need was kitchen stuff. But I will say she did almost let FH talk me into a $250 new electric razor. I have no idea why either of them thought it would be okay. He kept saying maybe his groomsman would chip in for it...LOL!

Eek this all sounds awful! BB&B kept calling M to make an appointment to go in for a consultation and to make our registry, I said forget it I'll do it online. If they're pushy about us coming in I don't want someone breathing down my neck while we speak about what drinking glasses we see ourselves using for the next many years.

Thankfully at Macys they just handed us the scan gun and told us to have fun.

And this is why I'm doing my registries online lol. Screw going to talk to people, I'd be rude as hell & say "look lady/guy, we know what we want, either let us look at it or I'm walking out" or "I'm sorry I didnt realize people like you assumed we'd get married only for the most expensive gifts"

Wow we had a great experience there. They talked about registry and then we were off, she did tell us about the incentive programs which I was thankful for because it was stuff I was very interested in. even after ebing married they have helped tremendously with completign the incentives. Very laid back and never felt pressured.

That's too bad that you had a less than great experience! Ours was amazing. Just a few days ago the gal sent us some promos in the mail. They even offered to order us lunch or dinner!

The lady that we talked to at BB&B explained a little bit about the different kinds of china, but that's about all. She gave us a booklet with recommended items to register for, showed us that you can bang the china on a cabinet and not break it, and sent us off on our own. I wonder if it is just store-to-store differences. On the other hand, Men's Wearhouse keeps calling us to offer incentives and get us to come in for fittings. They just won't give up!

I'm not surprised. We went in as walkins, didnt think you needed an appointment to register!, and the woman was very pushy about how she needed to come with us to tell us what we need. I kept saying no, and eventually was like if it's a problem, we can go somewhere else, then she was like oh no it's fine. I didnt want them trying to force us to register for things we didnt need- we were there to do a small registry to begin with (ha like we stuck to that!). But they do get incentives, just as the brides do if you register or get all the stuff as gifts. Nice and yet a bit messed up.

I would let the person say she was my helper so she could get the commission. But tell her she is coming along silent. If I have a question I will be the one to ask it. just like car buying. and at the end ask is there anything you think I missed?

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience at Bed, Bath & Beyond.

Since you're from Philly, I think you'll like Registry10 (www.registry10.com). It's a "buy local" wedding gift registry featuring independent shops, fun local attractions (like a horse-drawn carriage ride through Center City, hot air balloon ride, spas, membership to the Philadelphia Museum of Art), a honeymoon or house fund and a way to donate to a local charity like PAWS or Philabundance in lieu of a gift. There are absolutely no fees either. It's a great way to do your registry online but keeps the small businesses thriving in the Philadelphia area.

Registry10 also links to any traditional registries you may have and has a wedding website. All of your wedding information is consolidated into one page.

Here's the link to Registry10's Pinterest page too: http://pinterest.com/registry10/

My fiance and I went in yesterday. We are also registered at Target and Kohls, but found some good stuff there, so decided to register at BB&B too. The consultant was rude, and kept insulting our taste from our other registry, and even insulted our choices from that store saying "that set [of dishes] is horrible. You want something that will last as long as your marriage". She also kept complaining about how tired she is, and how it was a long day. Trust me lady, I work in customer service too. But you don't complain to your customers, and you definitely don't insult their taste. FH and I are debating canceling our registry because of how bad of an experience that was, and just buying the pots and pans we wanted ourselves.

My fiance and I had a very bad experience at BB&B the whole way through, we definitely would not recommend. First, the consultant we had was VERY pushy - he followed us around the store routinely recommending the highest price items or things we had no interest in (you HAVE to have this $75 platter; your registry is not complete without this!). It's clear the consultants work on commission, which made my fiance and I feel very uneasy; we asked him multiple times to let us pick things out on our own, but he still continued to follow us - in the end it felt like we had lost our voice in the process and we weren't sure what we had added because we wanted to and what we felt pressured into. Laterr when we actually had a chance to look at the description of the items (which we couldn't in the store since we were so rushed) we found that the consultant had lied to us -- he had told us some items were dishwasher safe when they are not, or some items contain pieces which they do not.

At home I went in to edit these things out, only to find out that the website is very glitchy -- I replaced or removed several items on the list and see the changes take place, and up to a few days later it would always default and the changes were gone! This meant we always received items we didn't want -- one pair of dishes we received 3x, I removed it from the website each of these times, and we had to return it back to the store each of these times, only to get store credit.

The straw that broke the camel's back was the very poor shipping job that BB&B does -- we ordered 2 boxes of wine glasses and a box of regular drinking glasses. All of these arrived at different times, and each arrived broken, and in the case of the drinking glasses completely shattered.

I would DEFINITELY not recommend Bed Bath & Beyond.
