Venue still wants me to pay when i want to cancel??

Jennifer, on November 7, 2019 at 12:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 6
So I was deciding on a venue, and we found one we liked, got the contract, reviewed, and signed. But we haven’t made a payment yet. We realized it wasn’t the one anymore and told them we would like to cancel. They’re now telling me I still owe them a balance of $4,000 regardless. Can they do that??? The contract states if a payment is not made that I will lose the date.

If the contract doesn't mention anything about cancellation fees I don't think you should have to pay. Read over the contract super carefully. I guess you could always just not make the payment and lose the date since that's what you want anyway?

They can't demand that amount unless its stated you have to pay it. They could only really keep the deposit if you paid one to hold the date. Read over the contract carefully to make sure it doesn't state your are held responsible for the amount due if you cancel regardless of payment. But if your wedding is so far out in may of 2021 then I don't see how they would want 4k.

Check cancellation terms on the contract for a fee. If nothing of the sort is mentioned, they can't make you pay them.

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Jennifer!

As the PPs mentioned, definitely check out the cancellation policy in the contract. It should state here any fees you would be responsible for in the event of a cancellation.

Let us know how everything gets resolved.

If it's not in the contract then no you don't have to pay. That's what the contract if for. Ask them where it says that in your contract and if it doesn't say it then their hands are tied.

Our wedding is Sept 2020 and our contract states that if we cancel we’ll still owe them money depending on how close to the date we cancel. I’m in a bit of a pickle myself with our venue and have to figure something out. Ours required a deposit of only $2000 which we paid to secure but we have multiple payments in between when we book up until ten days before. I’m hoping after all we’ve paid they don’t cancel our date that would suck. Hope everything works out for you not to have to pay extra.
