Vendors not cashing checks right away

JMA, on August 15, 2016 at 12:04 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 46

Hey guys! Anyone have any trouble with vendors not cashing your checks right away? I paid a deposit ($200) for hair/make up and this is going on two weeks that it hasn't been deposited. I can understand a few days but two weeks is too long in my book. I just want them to take my money lol. I think it's ridiculous but let me know if that typical. It almost makes me want to cancel the entire thing and go with a more timely company.

They are not taking your money and you are complaining? Lol

Are you more concern that your day is not booked because they haven't cash the check? I would ask them to clarify and confirm that they indeed received your payment. Some business like to batch deposit their check.

Hmm not sure what to say. Lol I gave my venue a payment when I went in to discuss final details. Lol they went in and cashed that thing the next day.

@OuidaNLuis haha I handled the check to them personally it wasn't mailed. I guess I am complaining, more so venting. Smiley smile I'm used to checks being cashed within 2-3 days, a week at the most. I just hate seeing money that's not really there to spend lol

@Kiandra I actually prefer to pay by credit card as well but it's not an accepted form of payment for most of my vendors. Guess I'll have to stick with cash! Smiley smile

Don't pay cash without getting receipts! Checks and cards offer you a form of security because you have proof of payment. Cash does not give you that.

Depending on the time of year, yes, it can take me two weeks to cash a check

Don't do cash unless you absolutely have to (and if you have to, ask why. For me, it's a red flag...)

It took a while for some people to cash/deposit my checks. It's a pet peeve of mine too... I keep close track of my finances, so it can be annoying waiting for a check to clear. I try to deposit client checks within a few days (it's easier now with mobile deposits).

We have one that hasn't been cashed for going on a month now. We mailed it, so I finally emailed her to make sure she got it. She said she did but hadn't gotten around to depositing it yet. Frustrating because it makes you think you have money you don't Smiley smile

I wouldn't book a vendor if they insisted on cash. There's zero protection if they back out or disappear. I don't like checks, either. With credit cards, the CC company can fight on your behalf to get your money returned ( in certain situations), and put your money back in your account while they do it. With check or cash, you're on your own. It's 2016, folks need to get with it and accept credit cards. If they need to build the fee into their prices, do it, but it seems unprofessional to me to expect a person to pay thousands of dollars to a business that doesn't know how to get a free card reader from PayPal.

I'd add though, that if its been a month? Call. I had a couple who sent me a check in February, and I never got it. I had her date saved but no deposit recorded, and frankly, although I'm really organized, unless I am looking for a deposit, I can overlook missing ones.

I don't accept CC because my fee is one of the smallest of any vendor, and frankly, I don't want to build a fee into my pricing (and in some states, that's not even legal....)

You should have seen my face when our baker told us that she ONLY dealt with checks. Like what age are we living in! I had to convince her to let me use a "money order" because I'm like you I absolutely HATE balancing a "check book" (trying to visualize money that's not there) and I use debit instead of credit for that very reason. Then she wants to go and throw a monkey wrench on my entire life lol

    I feel your pain!

On the other hand my mother is a lady who still gives checks out for gifts and those ppl never cash them right away. So I expected it.

Just let them know that you wish for them to cash it right away or that you would prefer to use a different method of payment.

Most of our payments have been in cash, but the few we did by check we saw come out of the account the very next day. They wasted no time lol

You might just want to check with your MUA

My photographer did this when I put down the deposit. I simply emailed her, and just "asked" if she cashed it yet cause I was trying to balance my checkbook lol and sure enough it was cashed the next day

@Celia it's totally understandable that you don't accept credit cards. The officiant is a much smaller fee then most of the other wedding vendors so it makes sense. I'm talking vendors where expenses are 1K plus. But I get that includes a fee for the vendors as well. I get both sides.

Our photographer and venue took almost 3 weeks. But it's wedding season and I know they were busy. I just kept an eye on my account.
