Vendors do not accept credit cards. Anyone else loving this?

RhnCasi419, on August 13, 2014 at 7:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 32

Wedding planning is such a learning curve. We are making progress by narrowing down our caterer and dj. I was surprised to see in their proposals that they do not accept credit cards. I was a little surprised but it is pretty awesome actually. At this rate we won't have much debt when all is said and done. For me it is a disciplinary factor and I love the idea they only accept check, cash ... for this reason. I almost whipped out the credit card to pay the dj the deposit. Not so fast ... I will have to withdraw from the bank acct and yay most of my dj is paid w/out interests! Its a good feeling, but I did not know this before this process. Does anybody know if they are all like this? Like, the florist for example. Do they only accept cash, credit for their contracts? It seems anything with a contract won't accept cc's.

FH and I haven't run into that yet but we refuse to use to credit cards to pay for anything involved with the wedding, even if we do pay it off the balance every month. Its too easy to get into trouble using them so we decided that if we didn't have the money to pay for it then we really didn't need it...this also came after a very in depth conversation about the possibility of opening a card specifically for the wedding and collecting airline miles for the honeymoon. We just aren't credit card people and between the two of us only have one for emergencies only

Seems weird. Credit cards offer consumer protection. Once you give someone cash, they can just poof and disappear on you. At least with credit cards there is *some* recourse and protection. Once cash is gone, it's gone.

I would be wary of vendors that don't accept all forms of payment.

That is awesome Maltese. My FH is just like you. For me, it is challenging, but I am doing good. I've been planning since early June and so far no credit debt. But it is tempting. I'm thinking of locking up my credit cards in FH's safe. I may have to put my dress on a credit card but it is 0 interest for a year ... so I would have a year to pay off my dress until it starts accruing interest. With all the talk I have heard over wedding debt I was surprised to see that these vendors didn't a accept credit, and I think that is great. At first I asked myself if they don't take credit then why do couples get into trouble with debt over weddings? But it must be because they either take loans, or cash advances on their credit cards. Its just nice to see ... and it is great for people who need discipline, like me! Your post is an inspiration!!

I would hate it. I like using a credit card for the cash back rewards. I don't ever pay with cash unless I have to. Also, if a vendor breaks a contract within a certain amount of time you can put in a claim with your credit card company and get your money back.

The reason some vendors won't accept them is because they charge a fee. My venue gave the option of a credit card but charged a 2% fee so we paid by check.

@SunshineJenn Yes that is what FH said! But, they are on our venue's preferred vendor list, which is a help for a peace of mind. I thought the same thing ... not only a debt thing, but security if they decide to not show up! Yes, our caterer and dj do not accept credit cards... They are highly reviewed ??

We've run into this everywhere. None of our vendors will accept credit card. It seems pretty standard.

The reason, we've been told, is because the credit card company takes at percentage of their profit, and they don't want that.

Yes, I have encountered that as well with some vendors. Mostly with the smaller businesses like my cake baker and my caterer. One that surprised me was my photographer wanting cash....but I guess he is a small business as well.

They all have recent reviews so I'm sure we are good there.

So far everyone except for my MUA has asked for a check, which threw me for a loop because I prefer to pay everything with my debit card. I had to go searching for where I placed my checkbook! Also, to book my venue, I had to go to the bank to get a certified check. That was kind of annoying, but I understand why. I'm booking my baker and florist next month so we will see how they are.

I believe only our photographer, church and our violinist didn't take credit cards. Everyone else from our DJ, venue, hair and makeup to the limo and cake people took credit cards.

My reception venue does not take credit cards. They want the last payment in form of certified check or money orders. Fine with me. Will have to check my contracts. Paying cash anyway so it does not matter.

Our are mixed some take credit card so don't. Credit card companies tend to charge big fees, so lots of small businesses don't accept them.

I do use my credit card when I can though, I get cash back. I use it for most of my monthly expenses and pay it off at the end of the month. I put my dress on it and paid it off a few weeks later before I was charged interest, and got cash back that I can use for other things.

I also like using credit cards for the added protection. Say you shop online or in a store that was hacked and your card number gets stolen. If it was a debit card you are out the money until the case is settled, and you may never get it back. If you use a credit card if you make a claim for an unauthorized charge you don't have to pay it.

Our vendors are about half and half in accepting cards. And some of those that do accept cards charge a fee, such as 4-5%. I agree with you that I'd much rather pay with a check so I don't have the debt.

I am very bummed about this as our venue doesn't accept it. We'll be paying them 25,000-30,000 and get cash back on purchases at 1 percent. Now if you do the math that's 300 dollars being left on the table. Credit cards can still be used to not go into debt, but just to work to give you more money.

Half and half for me. I'd actually prefer to use cards because we will pay it off every month and that way I can get the cash back.

I would be so bummed. Like someone else said, at least credit cards somewhat protect you. If someone disappears on you some of your credit cards would let you claim fraud.

I've put everything wedding related onto my card and now have $500 in Hyatt gift cards for my honeymoon. If I pay it off righ away I still have no debt and I get free money in points. It's a win win for me. All my vendors took credit cards.

So far I have booked my venue and my photographer and I had to pay them both with checks. I wish I could have paid with a credit card for the points, then just paid off the balance right away. I know it is because credit cards take a large fee for transactions. I make sure to photo copy the contract and the check for my files before I mail them out.

If you are a financially responsible person, this is not necessarily a "win."

Now if you aren't good with money and paying things off...I guess it is. But you are never forced to use them.

Some of our vendors only accept cash or check. We never had credit debt so we wanted to pay by credit to get the rewards points, then pay the balance off immediately. But we got to do that with the two most expensive deposits, so we are okay. I'm hoping we can pay the $10k catering bill on a credit card because that would be some amazing points! We would pay it off instantly, but getting the rewards points would be awesome.

I don't because my fee is relatively small compared to everything else and I don't want to pay the fee to the CC company. We do split payments, and I've had people split them up very small, lol.....

All my vendors so far accept cc. I prefer it, I don't always carry cash, hate going to the ATM and I want my points. Besides, we have the cash to pay back what we spend every month so no debt! And like SunshineJenn said, I like the added security,
