Using sealing wax for envelopes..

Melissa, on February 10, 2010 at 12:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I decided I would like to use sealing wax for the envelopes of our Save The Dates with a design stamped into it.

Question: when doing this, should you seal the original gum on the envelope or let the wax do the work? I'm a little worried they will come open in the mail.

I'd seal the envelope with the gum and then use the wax as a more decorative aspect. That way if the wax seal gets pulled off by the post offices machines the envelope will still be sealed.

You should probably still seal the envelope. But, before you do all your STDs, you might want to send a test one through the mail (maybe to your parents or your MOH or just to yourself). I've heard the wax doesn't hold up well in the mail equipment.

I agree with Konichiwa. You want to make sure that the STD gets there in one piece, even if the wax seal gets lost in the shuffle!

Maybe put the wax seal on the actual invitation, but on the inner envelope? That way the outer envelope will protect it, but you still get the effect.

Bright Eyes has a great idea with using the wax seal on the inner envelope of the actual invitation, because I'd be afraid with all the machines the post office uses the wax seal would come off.

You can also actually go down to your local post office and find out how much extra postage you'd need to have the STDs hand cancelled instead of run thru the machine. That way you'd have a better chance at having the wax stay in tact.

Deffinately seal the envelope first the apply the wax seal. I would make it thin so it doesnt catch on anything and fall off. We used them for our invitations but on the inside and the postage was the same. Also maybe check with the PO as they can be funny about lumps and bumps on mail.

They have wax made specifically for mailing, it's more bendable for the machines so it doesn't break apart. I used them on my invites. A couple invites got sent back to us because people had moved so I got to see first hand how it held up and it was perfectly fine. I did seal the envelope the normal way before sealing with the wax

I have seal and send invitations and I tested the wax seal in the mail a few time sent one to me and one to the other side of the country and it wasn't broken and all was fine. Also what Laura said is very true they have many different types of wax to buy make sure you get the right kind. When I ordered samples I got the wrong kind than I read up on them more and found the right one and it work for me.

I saw this thread and it prompted me to start looking into wax seals. FH really wants to use one on our invitations. I found this site and think it might be good. They seem to have a lot of information too (like about the different kinds of wax). If you end up using it I'd be interested to know how it turns out.

To answer the person who said to ask the post office about running the envelope through by hand rather than by the machine so the seal doesn't get rubbed off, that makes the cost go from $0.44 cents for postage up to $1.20 per envelope. I added little gold rings to my STD's which caused as little bump in the envelope and they had to be run through by hand. I wouldn't suggest it if you have 100 or so to send out and you don't want to spend a ton on shipping.

The reason for the extra charge is so that it doesnt run through the machines and ruin your seal and mess up the machines. Im going to use 2 envelopes and seal the inside one with the wax. I will need a little extra postage because of the bulkiness but its less than $1.20/per
