Updo's for thin hair - I am at a loss here

GrayCatVintage, on January 1, 2015 at 6:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I never went to prom or have had anyone ever "do" my hair. In fact, the first time I had someone other than myself cut my hair in 12 years was this past summer. Well when I had my hair cut the beautician commented on how baby thin my hair is and yes it is very thin and you cannot really do anything with it. I am at a loss for how to do my hair for the wedding. It will need to be put up for sure but I do not want to start looking at styles on line because I know my hair is too thin for the beautiful "weddingish" styles you see. Do any other brides have thin hair? How are you having yours done for the wedding?

Hairstylists solve this problem by adding a few extensions to your hair, give it volume and ull be able to have any do' you want Smiley smile

I have suuuuuuuuuuuuper thin hair. Like... Ridiculously thin. I have tape in extensions and I absolutely love them! I take them out myself every 2 months (when they start getting too long to hide comfortably) and put them back in myself. My stylist blends them and colors everything if it's needed. The only thing I really had to get used to was having to actually do my hair every other day. Instead of getting out of the shower and just going, I have to flat iron or curl everything or I start to matte up and fro out lol. That and I lose maybe 1 hair a week in the shower. When you take the tape ins out, it's almost scary how much hair you lose. You have to keep in mind that all of that hair you would've lost in the past 2-3 months is now being released with the tape you just removed. I pay $189 for 16" of high quality Remy human hair on Etsy and I reuse it for about 6 months. Then I buy new hair and so on and so forth. I'll try to get the link to the shop I go to. You'd want to email the owner first with pictures of your hair indoors and outdoors so she can color match you first.

    Here's what I buy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/156930276/5-star-remy-human-hair-seamless-tape

I have thin hair as well #whitegirlproblems ..I plan on wearing my hair half up and half off to the side. My stylist/MUA is going to have my hair sit in curls while she does my makeup. I will also wear a headpiece to give my hair more of a "lift"

I've also been taking omega 3 (this helps your hair be thicker) as well as calcium... might want to try supplements.

If you have thin hair, try Toppik. It comes in a bunch of natural colors. You sprinkly it on your scalp, and you have an instantly thicker head of hair from the scalp. Some extensions might help.

@Alexis that sounds terrifying about losing the hair. I lose handfuls of it in the shower, and then more after when I blow dry. I can't imagine all that hair coming out at once.

OP, I'll give you some of my hair. I have way too much. It's super thick and wavy.

My hair will fall out really easily so I am not sure if using extensions would really work Smiley sad I stopped ironing my hair or trying to curl it because I thought it was damaging my hair more but it still falls out just the same. I take a multi vitamin every day and I tried the biotin but the biotin made me feel awful. I might try taking more vitamin D, calcium, and omega-3 on top of the multi vitamin to see if it helps. I am a very healthy person I just have bad hair and thin nails as well.

Before I forget... I used to use Nioxin and it worked for about a year, but then I started getting chemical burns and scabs on my scalp so I switched to all organic shampoo and conditioner. No more chemical burn. No more volume either...

@Silan You should've seen me the first time I removed them! I ran downstairs crying to FH with a handful of hair and he was like, "Honey... I haven't seen any of your hair art on the shower wall in a few months. That's all the hair you should've already lost. It's been dead since before you took the tape out." I still cried. Then I came to my senses and realized he's right. I'm about to go take them out again right now actually lol.

You might not be interested, but here's a picture of the tape ins. You can see the volume difference between my real hair and the extensions. I can post my hair without any tape ins as well... Just give me a few minutes to dry my hair.

Keep in mind that in almost ALL of the pictures you will find in online inspiration boards, there is some level of "supplementation." I have CRAZY thick hair and, for one of the up-dos I tried, even I needed a little hairpiece to get the shape correct.

My sister's hair is much thinner than mine and she's had good luck using thickening/lifting products to achieve height and clip-in pieces where needed for volume.

A good (GOOD) special-occasion/bridal stylist will be able to work with you to achieve a look you like with the hair you actually have. Just, please, don't be married to a specific style. Instead, take a few images of looks that capture the feel you are going for and ask them what is possible.

I have fairly thin hair. The stylist added volume by teasing a little bit, but also curling it along the whole length. This was my inspiration photo-- I think it would probably would have worked if my hair was also thinner, but keep in mind the stylist will probably need to put a lot of product in, b/c thin hair tends to be "slippery", so updos can come undone easily if they are not super secure.

I'm not wearing makeup so excuse the horrible bags under my eyes. This is how my hair is without the tape ins. It looked just as horrible before I started using the extensions. It makes me sad lol. All of my hair pulled into pony tail is literally as thin as my tiny pinky. If your hair is as thin as mine, clip in extensions will be difficult to use. Back combing for girls like us is a horrible idea and most of the time the clip ins fall out. Forget about shaking any bon bons on your wedding night lol. If you don't want to use tape ins any curling would really work as well. Just start googling updo hairstyles and saving pictures! Sorry my picture uploaded 3 times before!

I would also suggest clip-in extensions, they can be dyed to perfectly match your color. You don't even need them to add extra length, just volume!

Alexis: My hair is as thin as yours, but your tape in extensions look amazing. Once I find a stylist I will ask them what they recommend. It is hard for me to even get bobby pins to stay put.

I've had wefts sewn in-between my scalp and micro-beads, I've had straight up micro-beads, and I've had fusions. The tape ins are definitely the winner for me. Your scalp doesn't hurt after they're put in and there's no weird bumps all over your head. Just try to find a stylist who's familiar with tape ins. They're still fairly new. I'd have her put them in the first time and either put them in yourself the next time or have a friend do it. I can't stress enough how easy they are to put in.

I have thin hair as well and also loose a lot of hair. My hair stylist did an amazing job with my hair. I asked her if I need to get extensions so I could have the hair style I wanted and she said no. I guess a good stylist may be able to give you some suggestions.

I have super thin hair too, and not much of it (at all). When my husband sees any of my hairs falls out he jokes about putting them into a collection for my future wigs...

Anyhow, I would really recommend a trial undo with the stylist that will do your hair before your wedding- this saved me. I brought in a few inspiration photos and she did her best, but it just looked flat. We realized that product alone wouldn't be enough, and that I would need to supplement with snap in extensions. I brought the extensions and a hair donut with me, and we ended up just using the extensions. Here's a photo so that you can kind of what we we were able to do. For comparison, my hair is chest length and if I pull it into a ponytail, and ponytail is probably around the width of a nickel.

(I've tried to find photos that show the hair, hopefully you don't mind! The 16" extensions are all in the low bun-ish part)

The type of hair-do that you want will also determine what 'supplements' you may need to achieve the look. Smiley smile

I have super fine hair so it doesn't have much volume like yours. I purchased clip in hair extensions from Bellami. They definitely gave my hair the volume it needed to have a more elaborate bridal updo! I ended up going with a half up style instead but still used the extensions because they just added so much extra oomph to my hair.

My hair is crazy thin (typical Norwegian hair) and when I make a ponytail it's also pinky size. But despite this, I've had great updos at multiple weddings I've been in, thanks to good stylists. I think it can be done well without extensions (although they are great options too).
