(*UPDATE* Page 5) DRESS IS IN! But :'-( ...bad news, way too tight (PICS)

So I posted here yesterday my dress came in and I was so excited to go see it! Well, I tried it on and it zips up, but that is it! I can't move....I can't breathe....I can't sit. As a shuffle around, the dress shifts up and bunches around my waist. They said they can take out an inch at most, but...

So I posted here yesterday my dress came in and I was so excited to go see it! Well, I tried it on and it zips up, but that is it! I can't move....I can't breathe....I can't sit. As a shuffle around, the dress shifts up and bunches around my waist. They said they can take out an inch at most, but the owner said I needed to lose weight :'-(. I'm so bummed right now. The last thing I thought I'd have to worry about was fitting in my dress. I haven't ever had a weight problem and have always hovered around the same weight. I hope I can lose enough to be able to be comfortable and dance on the wedding day! I'll need to lose about 10 pounds, and the last time I weighed that much was sophomore year of high school when I played tennis for 2-3 hours a day! BTW...my face is blurred because I have a lot of friends who are getting married and if they peruse this site, I want to be anonymous! Otherwise I'd show the whole pic ;-)

Hmmmm didn't know they ordered the 6. I still think it's on them. They are the experts and wedding dress sizes are NOT the same as street sizes. That's why they're there...to guide us. Can you have your mom call? haha

Why did they order a 6 if you tried on the 8 and it fit? I am confused.

Yeah that's why I have the same hesitation of stirring it up....I tried on the 8, it was comfortable, and they ordered a 6 with my agreement. I feel like I'm partly responsible. Does anyone know if 1" makes a huge difference in fit when it's let out? She told me that's like going up a size, so I hope so but that just seems like such a small amount? I think if I can focus on my midsection and thighs/booty I could lose maybe an inch? But I'm no expert on losing inches!

Lauren, are any of your bridesmaids "fighters"? You might have one of them go with you to the store to help make you feel more confident?

I tried the 8 on at another salon and a 12 at the salon where it was ordered from. I went with the measurements from the salon where it was ordered, saying I should be a 6, thinking it would still fit, and maybe then they wouldn't need to take it in at the bust.

If they measured you and ordered the dress then it should fit. That is their fault. Regardless of what you tried on somewhere else. Should you have spoken up about the 8 you tried on? Maybe. But it's irrelevant. They should know...now they should fix it.

I wish I was there, I would go with you and make them fix it!

Haha no....they're pretty much all as big of cowards as I am.... I feel like I could make it fit with some serious work and super clean eating. I've been talking about toning up (been doing Tone It Up videos and my exercise bike) and maybe this is just the motivation I need to kick it into high gear. I don't know...maybe I'm being stupid...I hope I don't regret it later. Maybe I'll go after work once more to see the fit again and really ask the questions about how much 1" will make a difference

An inch can make a pretty big difference. Though the general rule of thumb is that a size is 2 inches...

But I agree with the other ladies here. What you're saying is that the salon owner screwed up, ordered a too small size, and told you to lose weight rather than own up to their mistake. And you are willing to make yourself underweight/at an unhealthy weight for your frame rather than speak up? Oh, honey, you need to stand up for yourself! Don't hurt yourself so that they don't have to fix their mistake!

Ugh so I just called the shop and the owner said she can send it out today to have it get let out and then I'll know how far I need to go from there. I'm concerned about price now if that'll make the alterations so much more expensive if it then needs to be taken in!!!!! But is it worth peace of mind to know exactly where I stand?

I would ask them to order you the 8 - for all the reasons posted on here. Tell her you're not comfortable losing weight to fit into a dress a professional measured you for. Ask her to order the 8 and you will have it altered if need be.

I know you want your dress to fit, but I don't think you should loose weight, you are tiny!

I would be worried that once it is altered, even let out, they wont be able to exchange it. Right now it is an unaltered gown that they can exchange! However, you have to do what works for you.

The salon I ordered from did it this way: they took my measurements and compared my measurements to the dress makers size chart, then the consultant have me my size options, I have a weird body so my top and bottom were actually two different sizes, she recommended going with the larger of the two since it's easier to take things in than let things out. Before the order was placed I had to sign a "contract" of sorts stating that I was ordering the correct size based on my measurements and that the salon would not be held responsible assuming the size I ordered was the size that came in, it protects the salon from people who order a smaller size than recommended. It sounds like your salon did something similar. You can try to ask them about what they can do, but I would be sweet as pie and not raise hell. When I was in customer service I was much more willing to help people when they were respectful than the ones that would cuss and berate us. I'm not sure why they would have recommended you order a smaller size than what you were measured for.

Adding a corset to the back could help it loosen up as well.

She's supposed to call back later today to give me a price on alterations. Maybe I'll ask if that's a possibility when she calls back. Part of me sees it as motivation to get in really great shape, but I also don't want to shoot myself in the foot and regret it later! She did say she didn't think I should be concerned about the fit...she said 1 inch will make a huge difference (and its only 1 inch total, not per side....I asked for wishful thinking), but she did ask me to lose a little weight for her. She said that when she has brides come in that have gained to much she looks them in the eye and says, I'm concerned and you should be concerned. She said she didn't worry about that with me...so idk!

I cannot believe she told you to lose weight! 10 pounds to lose when you are all ready as slender as you are is probably too much! It definitely sounds like the store made a mistake in ordering the 6 instead of the 8. In my experience with bridal salons and dresses (gowns and maids dresses) they usually run small so you should get the size that fits or even a size up not down like they had you do!

I think the dress looks great from the photos so letting it out an inch may work in comfort/breath-ability. Does the bridal salon do the alterations there? I would tell them that since THEY messed up, you shouldn't have to pay full price for the alterations.

To be clear, based on the measurements taken, a 6 should work. They didn't order the wrong size based on the measurements. Actually my hips were exactly the same size as the hip size chart for a size 6, which is probably part of the problem....there's no give between the fabric and my body!

I'm with everyone else - they screwed up and telling you to lose weight is not the answer. I am also someone who doesn't like to cause trouble or upset others, so I totally get where you are coming from, but this is not ok. They need to order you the correct size like they should have in the first place. Even if your bridesmaids are shy too, maybe having someone there will help you feel stronger when talking to them. You don't have to be a screaming diva, just know that you are in the right and want to work with them to correct the problem.

Lauren, if everything you're saying is correct, the salon is wrong. They took your measurements and told you what size would fit. Now the size doesn't fit. They need to get you a different size. You signed off on the measurements they took, not an actual dress size that you tried on. I wouldn't talk to the salon lady anymore - have someone who can speak up do it for you. Mom? Dad? FH?
