*UPDATE* Freaking out, people with braces or had them HELP!

Anonymous, on May 4, 2011 at 3:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I had braces put on my teeth, why I don't know because I think they were fine but my FMIL did not. So she offered to pay for them and promised they would be off by the wedding (she works in a dental office)So I figured well there must be something wrong if she said I need them. So I thought they would come off and the end of May and then I would have a few weeks to adjust to talking again and let the my cuts heal that are on the inside of my mouth, and WHITEN! I was told they aren't coming off till a few days before the wedding. The first picture was taken the morning after the braces were put on and the other is from today. I only have a little over a month and there is a GAP! They look SO much worse now. I told him there was a gap the last time I went in and he told me there wasn't. They have to be pulled together ASAP and then I want the things OFF! HELP!!!

Amber I have braces and since i had teeth extracted prior to having them put on I had gaps for a bit. But every time he tightened them they'd be gone within a few days. Sorry to say but it doesn't look they're ready to come off!

Someone I worked with had braces when she got married. She had her orthodontist remove them a few days before the wedding and then put them back on. I'm sure it cost a pretty penny but that is what she did.

Also, needing braces doesn't always mean you have crooked teeth. I've had braces twice along with having all 4 wisdom teeth removed (they weren't even showing yet) and 2 bottom teeth removed. After my first round of braces, my teeth were straight but apparently I had an open and cross bite in the back. Which, according to my new orthodontist, meant there was a high chance of developing arthritis in my jaw by the age of 40.

Long story short, I got round-two of braces my sophomore year of HS, had jaw surgery summer going into my senior year. They broke my lower jaw and moved it forward about 1cm. Yeah, I have a farked up mouth. Smiley winking

But there was no gap before, and now there is.... So they look worse then when I started. Last time I was in he said he could put something on them to pull them together and then he told me I didn't have a gap and I didn't need it. But it's pretty obvious I do.

I had braces and I needed them because I had gaps and my cousin needed them even though her teeth looked fine, but it was more of a jaw issue...I remember it being a week or 2and the gaps were closed! My cousin who didn't have any gaps, they actually GAVE her gaps on purpose, and then they readjusted her teeth and put them back to normal with no gaps..and Im pretty sure that only took a 1-2 weeks as well. You should be fine...but if he told you there is no gap(and there is one) you need to to tell him asap to fix the issue, show him the picture you showed us...they're your teeth, so the guy needs to listen to your concerns...if he still tells you there's not a gap, then tell your FMIL that you need to see another Ortho asap.. Everything will be fine, don't panic!! Worst comes to worst, you just see another Ortho and they can fix the problem in a week or two..but you need to get on the ball with it, don't wait...

You shouldnt have gotten braces!! Your teeth were perfect!! awe Im sorry! Im sure they will be good for the wedding. What if you had them taken off and just let them go back to normal?

Agree with Cabana. Orthodontics correct much more than just crooked teeth. Even if they were to close the gap though, doesn't mean your braces would be ready to come off. They have to "set" in their desired position for a long time - which is why it feels like you have them on forever even if your teeth look perfect.

They are only on the top few front teeth to fix the "crookedness" which I didn't even know they were crooked. So its purely cosmetic the reason they went on. I just called FMIL and said look, I'm coming in before work tomorrow and he is going to put whatever it was on that will fix the gap and then when that closes, hopefully 2 weeks, I'm getting them off and wearing a retainer. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'm calling him on his cell phone to let him know I want the gap fixed then I want them off.

Amber, good decision...and don't worry, it will all work out and you're teeth will look great! You're the boss of your teeth and if they're on purely for cosmetic reasons and your not happy with the results, they need to fix it!

Oh my gosh...I did try to tell you that day that your teeth were PERFECT and didn't need braces! The other ladies are right...if your teeth are going to be straight and stay that way, the braces need to stay on for a while for your bones to "set." I agree 100% with your decision...fix the gap, get the braces off, and wear the retainer EVERY night or that gap will come back to haunt you! Does your FMIL feel terrible?

I will feel so much better when they are off, white, and even. HOPEFULLY that will be the end result.

@Rosie, NO she DOESN'T, That's the worst part. I just called her and I said my teeth look worse than when they went on and she said "I'm sure they dont but you can call the dentist and have him tell you they're fine if you need to." UGH!!! Its just more stress than I need right now, I couldn't eat anything at my shower, my bedroom antics have come to a halt(can't kiss), my mouth is constantly cut open, and I have to speak at work and its affecting that too!

Amber, I currently have braces too! I had to have a few teeth pulled because my mouth is so crowded, I have huge gaps in my mouth. I'm worried as well if they're going to close them by August, because they're going to take them off for me for my wedding. I suggest you show him these pictures and tell him your concerned. I wouldn't be nice about it either. He obviously sounds like he doesn't care, how could he not see that gap! I wish you the best of luck <3

I went to the ortho this morning and he admitted that he put a bracket in the wrong place. He took the bracket off and readjusted it and my teeth already moved! That was 2 hours ago. They feel so much better. He said in 2 weeks they should be back together and when he takes them off he will make a clear invisiline type retianer the same day so my teeth dont have a chance to move. Thanks for all your support and insight. I think it's going to all be ok. This is a picture right after they were readjusted today.

Wow, that is truly amazing! I can't believe they readjusted so quickly! I'm glad things worked out for you. We all know the wedding stress is more than enough for us busy brides lol.

Glad he admitted that he put the wrong bracket in. Now you're just going with invisiline retainer/braces thing?
