UNITY CANDLE SUBSTITUTES! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

Cheryl, on August 2, 2012 at 12:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 44

We don't want to do the traditional unity candle ceremony so we're looking around for something equally as memorable and meaningful. We have just found something called the cord ceremony or God'd Knot.

I like to hear some other options though. What are you ladies doing in place of the candle lighting ceremony?

We're doing the Unity candle...but there is a 'sand' ceremony...where you each add sand of different colors to one new glass container ..something like that....

Hand fasting is something we're looking into...having our hands bound by special material (like in Braveheart).

Some brides have posted previously about a ring blessing (your rings travel around to your guests-while the ceremony continues-and friends and family have a chance to say a blessing/wish/prayer). I love this idea.

We are doing the God's knot! I love those. I think the meaning behind them are awsome! what makes it extra personal is you can get them in your wedding colors, that is so cool to me!

We didn't do any of those! We looked at all those options and truly felt like the whole ceremony was a unity candle. Smiley smile So we just kept it short and sweet.

We skipped all the "unity" things. We figured the whole marriage ceremony was about unity, so we didn't need any gimmicks for that.

Then again, we had a Jewish ceremony. There are so many traditional elements to that (reading the ketubah or formal Jewish marriage contract, seven blessings, smashing the glass) that we figured it was already long enough without adding to it.

In place of any unity ceremony, we have decided to incorporate the signing of the marriage license into the ceremony.

I agree with a lot of the ladies here... the wedding itself is a unity ceremony, but I respect the traditions of families and the Church. We however, are doing none of it! I know that I would never display our unity candle, unless the sand looked like Jax E's, I wouldn't display it our home. We've opted to do a wine box "ceremony" where we will write letters to each other and put them in a box that my Dad is building. On our anniversaries were going to open the box, read the letters and drink the wine. I've seen where people use it as a time capsule almost, and I just like the idea of having something special on our anniversary.

We are doing a unity painting where we have two different colors (probably wedding colors) and we are going to pour them on a canvas... it will be nice to hang up in our house some day!

Here is kind of what I am talking about:

Similar to the sand ceremony i have seen a candy one lol where its just like 2 different colored m&ms or similar candy poured into 1 jar.

There are Honey ceremonies as well that are kind of cute where each of you take a taste of the sweet honey to remind you of the sweetness of your married life to come. Also have seen a hot sauce one to remind you of the spiceyness of whats to come lol.

Salt ceremonies go back to fertility and unity.

I have seen wine and mixed cocktail ceremonies as well lol.

You can do like Megan A said and do the whole time capsule write each other love letters or a copy of your personalized vows and seal it in a box with wine and either on your 1st anniversary or 1st real big fight open it up and remind yourselves why you got married in the first place.
