FH and I want to use the Irish name Maeve for a girl and Jace for a boy. He wanted Ragnor after watching Vikings. I told him he can use that name if he miraculously shoves a kid out of his ass.

As a teacher, I can't stand when parents try to get all cute with spelling and the way you pronounce the name isn't at all like it's spelled. I also don't think you should name your child an ethnic name (like Irish) unless you are actually are from that country or first generation.

The problem with some of these "unique" names is that can you honestly picture them as an adult? I can't take a grown ass adult named Addalynn or Paisley seriously lol. Cute as a baby not so much later on. I think older classic names are really beautiful. Something still not totally common but it doesn't sound like a "teen mom" name. Personal opinion.

@Mikayla I'm with you there on the cutesy names. Your child will have that name their whole life, not just as a child. I'd rather give a child a name they can grow into and have a childhood nickname than be stuck with a cutesy name as an adult. Will they sound juvenile when introducing themselves at 30, 40, 70?

I agree Mikayla! I really love the name Gertrude. It was my great grandmother's name. She went by Gertie but Trudie would be a good nickname for it as well. FH does not seem to agree with me. I might just have to settle for naming our next pet Gertrude and not our own offspring. I don't think Great Grandma Gertie will mind... I hope not anyway!

Yes, @mikayla, agree. My mom had me in 1981 as a teen mom and named me Crystal. Which in the scheme of what she could have named me, it's not horrible, but as a kid, I always wished for a more "normal" name.

Now my married name is Crystal Bonin, so I'm ready for a career in adult entertainment. But I'm a teacher. *hair flip*

If my FH and I decide to have children, we've decided upon Sylvia Emmelia and Schala Elizabeth for girls.

    Haha @CatsBoninCats!!

@Mikayla I agree -- I mostly notice this with little boy names. So many unique little boy names and I'm like -- is this a name for a MAN? Its cute when he's 3 but how about when he's 30??

@annakay yes! Like brayden, aiden, etc. No offense to anyone! I have several friends who named their sons names like that but I can not picture a grown man introducing himself as Aiden.

As someone with a name that doesn't sound how it's spelled, I agree with others...don't do it. Spell it the way it's supposed to be pronounced. My name is spelled Kirsten, but pronounced K-ear-s-ten. If my parents added a Y like Kyrsten or Kiersten, it would be more correct.

I definitely prefer more classic, feminine names for girls. I'm not a fan bizarre / incorrect spellings. I also dislike boy names used for girls.

Currently my favorite girls names are Abigail, Claire, Clara, Caroline, Emma, Sarah, Aubrey, Laurel, and Hannah.

I always wanted to name our daughter Kaydence because we met through music.... buuuut now I have a baby cousin Cade and he has a cousin Kayden so, we threw that idea away lol. Names for our imaginary girl baby now include: Aurora, Elena (or Helena), Kenna, and Haley (pronounced like Halley's comet, not Hailey).

My nieces name is Mckinley Avanell,(av-uh-nell) her middle name is her great grandmothers first name. She was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer when my sister found out she was pregnant with Kinley so they wanted to honor her. I personally love the name Noelle or Presley for a girl.

For the love of Pete, do your kids the nicest favor ever and do NOT give them a "unique" name. They'll curse you the rest of their lives as they explain it, repeatedly spell it, and listen to everyone get it wrong over and over. And most of them come across as stripper or trashy bodice-ripper names. Pick a nice conventional name that was popular 40 years ago for the birth certificate. Once they've developed a personality, you can saddle them with a unique nickname instead.

Try imagining them at 35 walking into a big job interview in a professional field and shaking the CEO/managing partner's hand while introducing themselves as....well, almost any our the "unique" names on here. Uh uh. Those names are a curse.

ETA - and their teachers will judge you for it. Looking at you, brides loading innocent future kids with excess "y"s shoved in everywhere. Cadence is a perfectly good name, for instance - why mutate it into Kaydence and doom your kid to a lifetime of frustration?
