Tux advice needed

Ariel, on May 19, 2017 at 1:04 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Thank you to everyone who let me know about the no tux before 6 rule.

I had no idea when my FH made the reservation there was an issue w etiquette. :-/

Ceremony is 11:30 a.m. Reception is 12-5. So...

How major of an issue is it if groomsmen are in black tuxes from MW. He picked this model:

https://tuxedo.menswearhouse.com/create-your-look/id/5237?cm_mmc=MW-_-Ecomm-_-TopNav-_-TuxStyles

Should I have him switch the reservation:

Thank you in advance for all your support. I am in panic mode.

I have never heard of this. FH and his GM's are all wearing tuxes and the wedding is at 4:00. I think men can wear tuxes any time of day. It cannot be classified as a black tie wedding if it's a daytime wedding. Is that what you are talking about?

Hi Erin, I think you are good because I assume the reception will go past sundown.

My wedding is in August so it'll begin and end in daylight

I have never heard of this rule. I honestly think the black tux looks way better than the grey one. Either way they are both tuxes. If you are really struggling with it just have everyone wear a suit or take away the vests so they look less formal.

My wedding begins and ends before sundown, and FH is wearing a classic black tux. I'm sure everyone will survive.

This rule is me to me as well, but I personally like the look of a black tux more

You're going to follow the "no tuxedo before 6 oclock rule" but then break the tuxedo rules about vests and ties?

If you actually care about tux rules:

    - the rule about not wearing a tux before 6 has an exception for events lasting past 6.

    - tuxedos are worn with bowties, not long ties. Long ties are not meant part of classic tuxedo rules.

    - those vests on the pics are too high. Tuxedo rules also say you're not supposed to be able to see the vest when the jacket is buttoned.

All that having been said... do you really care about tuxedo rules now?

Most people probably can't even discern a tux from a suit

This sounds like something a bit old fashioned- as in don't wear white after Labor Day- which went out in the 80's- I'd not worry about it....

People should wear what they want on their big day! I think rules like this are just unnecessary.

So yes, the traditional etiquette is that tuxes should not be worn before 6pm - because they are evening wear! This has obviously relaxed a lot over time, but I still do think it's a good guideline not to host a Black Tie affair before 6pm. Tuxedos were considered evening wear, and the daytime attire was formal morning dress (cutaway tailcoat, morning suit, etc.) I don't ever see guys in formal morning dress anymore!

Your groom can still totally wear a tux if he wants, but this option you've linked to looks more like a suit with the accessories! A tux should be worn with a tuxedo shirt with studs, with a waistcoat or a cummerbund, and a bow tie. The choice of grosgrain accents instead of satin also play down the typical visual queues of a tux.
