Travel expenses for photographer

Ashley, on September 11, 2015 at 8:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Is it normal to have to pay travel expenses for your photographer even if the venue is only 30 minutes away? I am trying to find a photographer but don't know what is normal. I found one who I love her pictures but I don't want to jump in uniformed. TIA!

30 minutes away from what? How far is it from his/her house? We paid travel, but our wedding was 60 miles out of the city, and he lived 15 minutes out the other way.

Everyone's travel requirements vary. Mine charges a travel fee 60 miles away or more, we just made it at 58 miles! Lol Literally 2 miles from the cut off

I charge for mileage if it's over 20 miles away... but it's a small charge. It's never more than $50 or so extra. I don't charge for mileage for weddings unless it's 50 miles away.

Our photographer was an hour's drive from our venue, and did not charge for travel.

Actually it is 20 minutes from my house and from her studio and only 13 miles. I have the contract but all it says is that the costs are due at the signing of the contract and include hotel feels, transportation fees, food costs, and baggage fees. It doesn't mention anything about a certain distance or anything. I just don't want to step over the line if I confront them about it.

We paid if it was more than an hour outside their radius. The way we thought about it, bottom line is that a price we want to pay for all of it? as in if the travel was included but higher cost.

Lots of companies in our area charge for travel beyond a certain distance. I definitely don't think it's unheard of, but it doesn't hurt to ask them to clarify the contract.

None of my vendors have charged me a travel fee and one of them is quite far away. But, it's not completely unheard of to charge a travel fee. Even if they charge a fee, it shouldn't be much. I've never seen it be more than $50.

For me it's only applicable after 50 miles, at my discretion. 30 miles, it's petty to charge travel....they want the job or not?

A photographer I was looking at will do up to 25 miles from our town...anything more she charges. It just depends on the photographer. Some don't charge at all.

I'm flying a photographer in- it's quiet literally my biggest expense- so yes- I'm paying for it.

But I suspect not to many people do that.

It really isn't important whether they charge a travel fee or not. What you need to look at for budget purposes is the total cost for the photographer. You really don't care whether the person charges $1,000 for the photography plus a $50 travel fee, or $1,050 for the photography with no travel fee.

We took this into consideration when we were looking. We met ours at an expo and luckily he is a preferred vendor for both venues so he is not charging for travel.

I think everyone is different. We talked to one photographer who was going to charge us extra for traveling 45 minutes from his home to our wedding location; personally, I thought that was pretty lame. Alternatively, the photographer we've actually hired is going to drive ~2.5 hours to the city where we live to take our engagement pictures for no extra charge! I know she is shooting another couple while she's here, but I was still pretty impressed that she offered to do it! We were okay with the idea of taking our e pics where we were getting married, but when she asked us if we wanted them taken in the city, we were so excited! We met and fell in love here, so it's going to make our epics even more special!

I do a lot of weddings at an island venue that is only 25 miles from my home/office. So, you'd think 1/2 hour travel at most, right? No way. The speed limit varies from 25-45 mph (but avgs. 35 mph). So, I have to allow 1 hour during off season and 1.5 hours during tourist season. Then, I build in another 15-30 minutes in case there is an accident blocking the 2-lane road. So, I may make it there in 1 hour and spend a half-hour or more sitting in the parking lot, killing time (my time). Worst case, I arrived only 10 minutes before the ceremony was due to start (but, phoned ahead to let them know I was stuck in a huge traffic jam).

My photographer lives within the city that I will be getting married. However, he is very popular in Austin (90 miles away) and Houston (200 miles away). He does charge to commute to the other cities; however, since it is not applicable to me I am not sure of the travel rates.

My MUA will be traveling from Austin to SA and I will be compensating for her travel fees.

I def don't mind compensating if that is the norm.she is only the first vendor I have looked at so I am sure there will be small expenses like that that I didn't expect. I just don't want to get the wool pulled over my eyes bc I am new to this. Thanks for all of the input. I will definitely ask her about it just to make sure.

I and my photographer live in Indiana and my wedding is 3 hours away in Beaver, Ohio. Yes I am paying her for the gas, her hotel room for 2 nights and feeding her while she is with me.

Our venue is about an hour and a half from where our photographer is based, but because he covers the Philadelphia/NJ/NYC are he doesn't charge a travel fee for the ceremony itself. However we did have a nominal travel fee for him to drive to CT (3hrs) to do our Engagement shoot. Your photographer probably has that info in her booking stuff so that anyone who lives further isn't surprised when there is a fee.
