Travel expenses for photographer

Is it normal to have to pay travel expenses for your photographer even if the venue is only 30 minutes away? I am trying to find a photographer but don't know what is normal. I found one who I love her pictures but I don't want to jump in uniformed. TIA!

Our tent vendor charged a travel fee, and he was in town. Our photographer didn't, and she was 40 miles away! It's all dependent on your vendors.

I do charge a fee for anything at the Jersey Shore in season, anything in nyc (with 14.00 tolls and 60.00 parking) and any location where the travel is going to make me so nervous that I'll add two more hours to my day to NOT be worried about being there.

I have a 'whole day' fee for places very far away, but I'm truly there for the whole day. If my couple wants to do rehearsals, I'm there; heck, I"ve even set tables, lol.....

It's not unusual to charge a travel fee and every vendor has different distances they start charging at but I guess I just don't see what they'd even charge for if it's only 13 miles away. Gas? Because that's maybe one gallon's worth, round trip. I would just ask for clarification on the amount and what it will go towards before you make a final decision.
