Traditional Church Ceremony Music

Stephanie, on July 2, 2018 at 6:19 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 8
Help! What are some suggestions for traditional church ceremony music for the bridal party entrance, brides entrance, and our exit? I'm assuming the bridal chorus is the most traditional for my entrance but suggestions are greatly appreciated! My Pastor wants us to pick and hasn't provided any suggestions besides it has to be church appropriate. It will be played by the church pianist. Thanks in advance!

Most brides use Canon in D. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is beautiful too. A good recessional is Ode to Joy.

Thanks! I did hear Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring and liked that for the entrance! What about the Wedding March for recessional? Is that traditional? Thanks again, very helpful.

Canon in D is very traditional! I’m using it because I love it and it’s also what my mom walked down the aisle to at her wedding

Yes, the Wedding March is traditional too. You can listen to traditional wedding music on YouTube to get more ideas.

Both Mendelssohn's Wedding March and Wagner's Bridal Chorus were popularized for use in weddings by the marriage of Victoria, Princess Royal to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. So neither is actually terribly traditional. In addition, not all churches consider them to be appropriate. The Catholic Church strongly discourages them and some parishes forbid them. Some Lutheran communities also forbid them.

Canon in D is common. I think most places allow this. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring is also common and would almost certainly be permitted. Are there any hymns your church sings that you like? Those would be church appropriate and the church pianist would already be familiar with them.

Interesting, thanks! We are getting married at a Lutheran church so I may just have to ask them for suggestions. My fiance and I are new to the area we are currently living so we don't have a church here. So in regards to a favorite hymn they do I don't know or have one. Thanks!!!

I am using “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace...but I found different versions on Spotify. Also, I’m using the song “How Beautiful”

My other choices were: Abide With Me, and As the Deer

We used Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring for the seating of the mothers, Cannon in D for the bridal party and then the flutist joined in when the doors opened for my entrance, and for the exit we used Hornpipe from Water Music. Here is our program that lists all of the songs used during our ceremony and mass.
