Too early to start registry?

Nessanay, on February 27, 2017 at 8:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

Hello!

I had a few questions about gift registries!

1.) How early should a registry be started? Is it too early to start now?

2.) How many places should you register at?

I have heard that a good rule of thumb is to average 2 gifts per invited guest so that there are plenty of options for your guests to choose from. I also have planned (and heard) to have gifts in varying price ranges.

Should I try to find 1 place where I can register for everything? I kinda peeked around and seem to have different things from like 3 places that I really love, but still don't even have enough if I am aiming for 2 per person. I also want to avoid being gift grabby so I guess I am just not sure what the proper etiquette for a registry is.

Thanks in advance!

ETA: Please let me know if I have heard improper advice! Most of the advice I received was from family or friends who are married, or from google, which is not always a wedding planners best friend!

I recommend Amazon. I have three (Amazon, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Etsy) and Amazon has most everything on it.

We did the in store registry at Bed, Bath and Beyond, but I switched most everything over to Amazon because the items were less expensive. Both of those places had a thing where you put in the amount of guests and as you add gifts it has a percentage like "you've registered for 20% of gifts recommended for your guest list" type thing. I would start now. I've done a lot of editing through the process, adding things I actually would use and removing stuff that were added during the fun of registering.

I would register as soon as possible. People were asking me the day after we got engaged where we were registered! It is good to have about 2 gifts per guest and have several price points to be sensitive to your guests' budgets. I would register at 2-3 stores and make sure that the registries at each store are different. Whatever you do, don't put your registry info on your wedding invitation! You seem to be on the right track though!

When registering at BBB, remember that people will likely use a 20% off coupon on the item. (This is good to keep in mind when comparing prices to other stores/Amazon.)

I started mine in October. The only issue I've run into is some things at Macy's have since been discontinued and we've had to swap them out for other items. No biggie. I registered at Macy's and BBB. My Macy's I think has 100 items on it, BBB has about 200, I wanted to give my guests some options and have gifts at different price points.

Also I registered for a lot of the same items on both registries. Your guest for example may have a Macy's credit card or hit a BBB sale or know someone that works at Crate and Barrel etc...and can get a better deal at said store. I stalk the registry once/twice a week and take off anything that's already been purchased from the other registry.

I think 3 stores is pretty normal for registries. Register as soon as you want/can, it won't come off as gift grabby unless you shove it in everyone's face. Put links on your website, make sure to have a wide range of prices and tell you MOH and close family members where you are registered. Then they can spread the word. Have fun!

Also, I wanted to add that registering is a surprisingly time consuming process (at least for us). I would start now!

    Thanks everyone!

While on the topic, what was your experience for registering? I have only peeked online but I love the idea of going to a registry event or registering in store with FH. Did anyone do both and have a preference?

It's not too early, just remember to check it often as many items are discontinued or out of stock.

We mixed it up and did BBB for the brick and mortar and Amazon online (and were able to add most items from BBB to the Amazon Universal Registry - awesome tool!) for those who prefer to shop online. We have an array of pricing, from under $5 to 3 items over $200 and everything in between.

We're already registered. We wanted to get it done. My showers will both be over the summer, since I'll have to travel to attend them, and I get summers off (teacher).

We did BBB and REI. We went to the stores on our own and wandered. We had a lot of fun picking stuff out. We registered for like 1.2-1.5 gifts per. invited guest, over a wide range of prices, so people can have options.

One of my BMs went to a registry event and she said it was a lot of fun!

I just wanted to say thank you for asking this! I was looking at the checklist provided by WW and thought it was weird to have my registry so soon, but now I know it's perfectly fine!

When you register in store, keep in mind that you usually can register without a staff member helping you, if you want. FH and I did this. I did not want an employee to follow us around and pressure us to register for certain things. We had done a lot of prep in advance (reading reviews online, researching brands), and we had a good idea of what we wanted. After we registered on our own, we returned the scanner and asked any questions that had come up and that we wanted help with. This worked great! Less pressure.

I started my registry a year before hand. I recommend 1 big box and 1 online only (Amazon). With your wedding being in Sept this year, I would start it this weekend.3

If you are already living together just register for upgrades or things you would like (I.E)Soda Stream or something along those lines.

I registered after christmas/new year and I still have had things go out of stock... Don't go too early, it's bound to happen!

I highly recommend the target registry. There is a specific app just for the registry, and you can use it to scan items in the store instead of using the tag scanners they have there. It updates you when something goes out of stock too. I also have Amazon, but I don't have nearly as many items. I think it's because we did our target registry first and have a lot of household items. Amazon has been nice to add weird things that we want but couldn't find (a whirly pop, a Cornhole set, and a spinning tie hanger)

It's never to early to start a registry. The only concern is that there may be some items that may be discontinued, sold out, etc. if you add it on way before the wedding. Also, I only registered at one place (myregistry.com). It's so convenient and you can add literally anythinng. Check it out and good luck Smiley smile

We did two: BBB and Amazon. Bed, Bath and Beyond we went to in person. Initially, an employee followed us around, which made the whole thing a bit more awkward and time consuming than it needed to be. Eventually, she had to leave and we had a lot of fun re-circling the store to pick items on our own.

I love online shopping (and Amazon in general), so I found making the online list to be more enjoyable of an experience. No pressure and endless choices!

I registered with Amazon (obsessed), Kohls (for the older people who like to do shopping in person) and Etsy. I started BBB but the employee just followed is around the store with the scanner which was pretty annoying. I ended up deleting the whole thing when I got home. It was a waste of time in my opinion. If I had to do it all again I would just do everything online lol
