To fondant or not fondant that is the question

Happy2b MRS.Henderson, on February 23, 2014 at 1:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

I am doing red velvet 3 tier wedding cake what is everyone's take on fondue for icing. From my understanding the taste is not great but it makes the cake more beautiful. Are you having fondant as your icing?

We're doing fondant, but mostly because the style/decoration I wanted on the cake is more easily created when using fondant. Some people like the taste and some don't. People can just eat around it if they don't like fondant, the same as people who don't eat frosting do.

Agree with what you have said; fondant allows for a 'cleaner' look, but isn't known for it's taste. I'm not to familiar with red velvet, but I thought one of the big perks of red velvet was the cream cheese icing (similar to carrot cake). Would you have to give up that in lieu of fondant?

Well it also helps hold the cake together, although gross. What does your cake person say?

Here are my non-fondant inspiration photos (I don't know what look you are going for, though):

Fondant isnt an icing. You still put a little icing on the cake underneath. And honestly red velvet taste horrible with fondant and tastes extremely bad when not used with cream cheese icing. The only thing that really pairs well with fondant is buttercream icing.

Hklo yes we would have to give up the cream cheese icing every cake that I fall in love with my baker says it is fondant so I'm starting to lean towards fondant but I wanted some opinions of what everyone thought. Just a curious btb trying to make my cake awesome. FH loves sweets and cakes so I am having 2 cakes grooms cake and our wedding cake.

Gotcha. I would vote for red velvet with cream cheese icing and no fondant, BUT, that might not give the look you are after.

It depends on the design of the cake you want. Some designs only allow for fondant to create the look.

I want a lot of detail so my cake will need fondant on the outside with a buttercream layer right underneath. I don't like fondant so the venue will be cutting the fondant off before serving it to guests. So we will only be eating buttercream (or cream cheese icing in the case of the red velvet tier). Best of both worlds - look of fondant but taste of buttercream.

I really wanted fondant, because I liked how cakes look with it. But there are other icings that they can use that look the same or just as nice as fondant. Our baker told us that alot of people hate fondant, so we went with an icing that looks similar but tastes much better.

My baker is making me do fondant. I am getting married in July, and although everything is inside, she was very worried that any sort of buttercream wouldn't hold up. We are doing red velvet also, with the cream cheese underneath!

As far as I'm concerned, it's very silly to pay for a shiny smooth practically inedible shell for your cake. I like cake because it tastes great; I'm not impressed by how a cake looks if it's covered in fondant. To me, it's like saying, "But look how pretty!" about a cake that's mostly cardboard.

I'm a cake decorator and I love fondant decorations. I always suggest getting the cake soft iced and then just doing fondant decorations on top. Fondant is too needy lol its honestly a waste of money when you can get the same look using different things.

I like the look of fondant, but I'm *hoping* that when we talk to bakers, we can get a design similar to what we've found that we love in buttercream, just because honestly, fondant tastes like pre-chewed gum. Ew.

IF you go with fondant, honestly, just have them put a thick layer of icing underneath (they CAN do cream cheese frosting, too) and then the fondant. Most people will likely peel the fondant off the cake before eating it anyway, it seriously comes right off.

Say NO to fondant!!! no matter what anyone says it doesn't taste that great and if you are doing red velvet then stick with buttercream or cream cheese. any good baker can get those seamless looks without having to use Fondant. My FH and I are HUGE fans of the red velvet cake and to do anything other than a cream cheese or butter cream frosting on it is just wrong. sorry am a foodie and this is only my opinion.

I really don't like fondant. I'm not even crazy about the look it gives to the cake. a GREAT baker won't need fondant to create a beautifully sculpted and clean looking cake.

if you do decide to go with fondant- you will still have the icing. that is what gets the fondant to adhere to the cake. you always need a base layer of icing under fondant

I haven't decided yet but am leaning toward the fondant because of the look.

However, I would say fondant does not taste good and is just for decorating purposes. I had my sons first birthday cake made with fondant. It looked AMAZING but although there was butter cream between the layers and underneath fondant, I had tasted better.

Nope. Tastes disgusting. There might be a fondant bow or something but not the main icing. Buttercream all the way!

"Not great" is inaccurate-- "DISGUSTING SPIT THAT OUT NOW" is more like it. I'd like to enjoy my cake, so no fondant here. Most bakers can make buttercream look just a great, anyway.
