To fondant or not fondant that is the question

I am doing red velvet 3 tier wedding cake what is everyone's take on fondue for icing. From my understanding the taste is not great but it makes the cake more beautiful. Are you having fondant as your icing?

It depends on if it's more important for your cake to look good or taste good. I personally don't like how fondant tastes, I'd rather have buttercream.

I hate fondant. i was a little sad i couldn't have a white wedding cake (because with buttercream, you can't get a white white), but i hate it so much it would ruin the cake for me. if it doesn't bother you or you don't mind picking it off, go for it. it definitely gives you a clean, white cake

We're not doing fondant because FH hates it, he thinks it's gross. My best friend is a pastry chef and so she will be doing our cake. A good pastry chef should be able to do a beautiful, clean look even without fondant. Fondant is a matter of personal preference and a good cake artist will make you a beautiful cake with or without it!

I've seen lovely non-fondant cakes, and you can definitely get a smooth finish with buttercream when it's done well. I just don't see the point in paying extra for something almost inedible. It's cake; no matter how pretty it is, what's the point if it tastes bad?

We're doing fondant because of the design we wanted. Our baker said that she uses a thin layer of buttercream between the cake and fondant as a glue. Guests can just peel off the fondant and still have the yummy buttercream.

I’m not a fan of fondant so we went with buttercream frosting. The bakery tried to talk me into fondant because they feared how the cake would withstand with the heat, but I couldn’t do it, I’m happy we ended up going with buttercream and it looked and tasted fine.

The bakery I'm using specializes in a delicious buttercream icing, and they're able to create beautiful designs with it anyway, so there was no way I was going to pass that up for icky fondant. Fondant is definitely not tasty and I really want to enjoy my cake!

We're doing regular icing to cover most of the cake and fondant flowers. The icing base doesn't look as smooth, but it was still pretty and $225 cheaper.

I'm having a red velvet cake to. With cream cheese frosting. We aren't having fondant. I don't really like the taste. Your baker can do designs in the frosting I you don't want fondant.
