To cake or cupcake?

SoonToBeAkers, on May 5, 2016 at 9:30 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 47

So I've always thought of doing cupcakes and one small cutting cake for our wedding. I feel like it's easy, efficient, can have a couple different flavors, cute and the potential for less waste. My sweet FH asked if I want them because it's cheaper or if I really just want them because I like them. So now I'm thinking about it. Only have about 110 guests so either way it wouldn't be too crazy costly. Do you guys see any pros or cons for a cake vs cupcake debate? Why did you choose what you did?

Cupcakes aren't necessarily cheaper so I think it's a personal preference. Sounds like you like the cupcakes so I say go with them!

Your plan is exactly what we are doing...remember the icing to cake ratio is so much better in a cupcake!

Ooooo...and your date was our original date! Must be something about that day! Lol

Eta: oops I probably should have put that second comment in an edit. Got too excited when I noticed your date. Sorry Smiley smile

We are doing cupcakes because I LOVE a good cupcake! It's different that what is usually done in our area and the cupcakes are delicious! We will also do a small, two layer cutting cake. I don't know if it would necessarily be cheaper to do one or the other. There are pros and cons to both! You may need people to cut and serve a cake vs. a cupcake that is ready to go! Although it may be easier to store a big cake/sheet cakes vs. storing a bunch of cupcakes.

We are doing cupcakes! I like the idea of a variety of flavors but we are also making sure we have a gluten free option and with cupcakes that helps. One of my sisters has a gluten allergy so we like the idea of having options for her too and they can still be tasty!

We are doing cupcakes!!! Cupcakes are amazing and for whatever reason I'm not a fan of cake. Weird I know. This way we can have a few different flavors for guests and since almost half are gluten free we can make sure those guests can eat dessert with everyone else. Just make sure to label it ;-)

I prefer cake for events like this. I have been to so many parties with cupcakes that are dry from sitting out all day with the cake part exposed to air. I find that cakes dry out a lot slower because the icing protects the cake. But that is totally personal opinion, and I certainly wouldn't side-eye anyone for having either. I would just be happy for cake/cupcakes!

We're doing cupcakes. We have more flavor options that way, we think it'll be easier for guests to take home extra cupcakes in small boxes, and we're offering a gluten free option as well. We'll have a small cake on top too.

We're doing a small cake and the cupcakes. We wanted to have a variety of flavors(5, 6 if you include the cake), which you really can't do with one big cake. If you like the idea, go for it.

We are doing cupcakes! We like the idea that we can have 2 different flavors and we aren't really cake people! If you want cupcakes, go for it!! Smiley smile

We are going to do cupcakes because we can pick a few different flavors, people are more likely to take left overs home, and we can get a dozen gluten free for FMIL and others

We are doing a 7 tier cupcake stand for ours with a small cutting cake on top. I feel like it will be dramatically more efficient. After we had made our decision on this our caterer offered to add a second dessert option for our guests at no extra charge since they will not have to cut and serve the cake. So now we will be able to have cupcakes and cheesecake for all the guests.

FH and I chose cupcakes! I like the idea of cupcakes being fresh vs. a tiered cake that has to be frozen in order to stack. In fact, the baker we chose won't do tiered cakes for that exact reason, they always want their product to be fresh. We chose to do a mixture of regular size cupcakes and mini cupcakes, plus we'll have a small cake for us so we can do the traditional cake cutting. I love that we can have a variety of flavors (2 for regular size cupcakes, 3 for mini cupcakes, and 1 for our cake...so 6 flavors total). We went with the mixture of regular size and minis so that people who really enjoy dessert can partake in the regular size cupcakes and people that might normally skip cake because it's too much can eat a mini cupcake. Also, guests can enjoy more than one flavor if they choose to eat a few minis rather than a regular size cupcake. Even when you have multiple cake flavors most guest wouldn't eat two whole slices of cake so they'd have to choose one. As far as pricing, cupcakes were cheaper for us. I know that isn't the case for every bakery though. We have to pay to rent a cupcake stand, but that's cheaper than the cake cutting/serving fee that we would've had to pay to the venue.

We are doing both. A 3-tier cake (different flavors for each tier) & cupcake favors. FH is really hoping for lots of leftovers. We love our baker and want all the cake!

Guys I'm so happy to know that I'm not totally untraditional with cupcakes! You guys pointed out some great benefits!! Ashley P, I never even thought about doing mini cupcakes too, what a good idea! And I can do the cupcakes in my colors too whereas a cake has one solid theme....I could do some yellow frosting, some mint frosting and some gray frosting! I'm getting a beautiful image in my hsa now! Thanks so much guys!!!

    We actually did both.

We ordered somewhere around 80 cupcakes (for 60 guests), and 4 ten inch bundt cakes in different flavors (Chocolate, lemon, pecan praline, and pumpkin spice).

The cakes were the bigger hit, but it was Nothing Bundt Cakes. They're freaking delicious. lol

I'd say go with what you like better, and what is most cost effective for you.

I've been to weddings and showers with both, and I can honestly say I've never had a bad cake or cupcake. I'm going with a three or four layer cake (depending on final guest count) because it's included in my package, and because my bakery produces some truly stunning cakes - I want to show it off to everyone!

The cupcake idea would save you a lot of money and you can present them to look just as good as a big wedding cake, if done right.

Good cupcakes will be close to as much cost wise. I clearly have a different view on cupcakes - I personally feel like cupcakes are for children's parties. I think they are way more plain (there is no filling usually) and I think that part of the fun of the wedding cakes is the many layers (of cake/filling to each layer of the cake)

Also, fair warning a lot of bakers who do cup cakes make them in mass and freeze and frost them later... so they tend to be much dryer than other cake.

If you want several flavors you can usually do one per layer, as long as your outside frosting is all the same.

We're doing small cake and cupcakes in different flavors. Our cake flavors are chosen for our personal tastes (multiple flavors with Nutella, red velvet) and we liked the idea of letting people getting flavors they might like better. Every wedding cake we've had has had fruit in it which we both hated and therefore didnt finish so we wanted something most guests would like. It's also easier to transport and store if there are leftovers (doubtful) and if people wanted to take cupcakes home, we'd have boxes for it. I initially wanted that as favors (2 birds, one stone) but FH wants other favors. So I'm team small cake and cupcakes.
