To cake or cupcake?

So I've always thought of doing cupcakes and one small cutting cake for our wedding. I feel like it's easy, efficient, can have a couple different flavors, cute and the potential for less waste. My sweet FH asked if I want them because it's cheaper or if I really just want them because I like them....

My sweet FH asked if I want them because it's cheaper or if I really just want them because I like them. So now I'm thinking about it. Only have about 110 guests so either way it wouldn't be too crazy costly. Do you guys see any pros or cons for a cake vs cupcake debate? Why did you choose what you did?

My FH and I are doing the same thing! We booked ours already and it was definitely cheaper! My FH loves cupcakes so that is why we also went that route.

It's all cake, I think cupcakes are perfectly fine!

We're doing an ice cream cake, how's that for non-traditional! Smiley winking

We did cupcakes and everyone LOVED them!! I had a 6" round for us to cut for the traditional feeding part, but then had a "cupcake cake" for the guests (plus a billion other desserts that also acted as the favors) as well as a grooms cake (I had bought two cake toppers and dammit, I was using both!!) For the cupcakes, we chose 4 flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Chocolate Peanut Butter and Rainbow Cookie... OMG. like little heavenly bites in your mouth, people are texting me about them 5 days later! DH's office asked him to bring in the extras we had left over (and boy did we have left over!!) I brought in about 20 for my office, he brought in 12 for his and I've eaten one each night since the wedding LOL! SO YUM. Personally, I liked the idea of the variation in flavors, plus, if you get them made right, you definitely dont have to worry about their quality. They will most assuredly stay soft and delicious... even 5 days later... and at 11:45pm... and 6am... and instead of lunch... ;-)

If you do cupcakes no one has to serve and cut the cake. Our bakery would do it for $1 a person so that another price add for cake.

We chose cupcakes because we couldn't decide on a wedding cake design that would mean something to us (it's just a cake I know, but it's how I feel, lol) that didn't cost close to $1000. The lady who is doing our cupcakes has over 100 flavors to choose from and we can choose as many as we like. I think it's nice and different and gives people an option instead of only 1-2 cake flavors. She also does small cutting cakes so we can have the traditional cake cutting part of the wedding. I think it's all a matter of your tastes and what would work better for you and FH.

I appreciate all of your advice so much! This has been so helpful to read! I'm definitely liking the points of that there are more flavors for people to pick from and easier to serve! And honestly with the overall fun feel of our wedding I think they would fit in perfectly! Thanks so much for everyone who weighed in!!! Smiley smile

I actually think cupcakes are more expensive. I plan to save money by doing a small decorated cake for cutting and a serving cake for the majority.

I'm doing cupcakes, it's cheaper than doing a decorated fondant cake (at least from my baker). I liked the idea of doing several different flavors

It depends, does your wedding package include cake cutting? If it does than I would do a cake but if not , cupcakes are easier to serve.

Cupcakes are not necessarily cheaper. Most bakeries will do 2-3 cupcakes per person, which can (depending on what you want out of a normal cake) cost more than the cake per person.

If cost is a concern have a small cutting cake and then keep a few sheet cakes in the back to be served after the cutting ceremony.

If you're choosing cupcakes just cause you like them more: right on.

It is about the same price once we add an anniversary small cake & cake cutting cake but we are still doing cupcakes bc we aren't paying for them to deliver to our venue so cupcakes will be easier to transport. It also saves on wait staff bc there doesn't have yo be someone cutting the cake.

I prefer cake for weddings. Nothing against cupcakes, but I can go buy a fancy cupcake any day of the week for no particular occasion. Wedding cake just feels more special to me.

I'm doing a cut cake and cupcakes. Total cost 300. Wedding cakes start at 200 for me. While it's a cost saver, it's also what I wanted. I'm big on cupcakes, like LOVE them. But I wanted to have the cake cutting experience. I figure it's the best of both worlds!

I am doing cake! Doesn't hurt that I own a bakery Smiley smile. I plan on doing a 6 tier dummy cake over Christmas as my FH will be deployed and I can later display the cake in my store. Then have our caterer serve my sheet cakes to save me the stress of decorating the day before my wedding.
