Tips/suggestions - pulling off a mobile wood-fired pizza oven as the main food at wedding reception

Harts&Bows, on May 3, 2017 at 12:59 PM Posted in Planning 1 8

I always thought I wanted a plated dinner as I don't love the idea of people having to go to stations bu FH and I are doing our own wedding and we want rustic casual, focusing more on the day and us than the details (I get stress migraines - anything to keep the level down so i can just enjoy the day). My fiance first told me he liked me over wood-fired pizza and beer, a favorite of ours, so we are thinking about carrying that to the wedding. I would still like to keep it somewhat classy (nice serveware, etc) and a classy serving table set up. Any other suggestions/tried and true tips that i can work with our caterer on to ensure we can bring the level up just a bit so the wood-fired pizza idea is fit for a wedding? Note, we will have apps during a cocktail hour, different salad options, and dessert, too. She can also do additional entrees to substitute, though i am trying to keep it simple. Serving wine/beer only. Thanks in advance!

I actually went to a wedding that did this a couple years ago! The only issue I saw with it was that the pizza took a while to cook and didn't all come out at the same time. So it took a long time to get everyone fed. I'm not sure how many people you're inviting and how many pizza ovens there are/how many pizzas the oven can hold, but that is something to keep in mind! It was really delicious once I got it though.

We have a truck like this in our area - I think it's delicious!

However, I feel that this would only work if your wedding is 50 people or less. It is essentially a buffet line that they are prepping and cooking as you wait, so it takes longer than a regular buffet.

There is nothing wrong with a plated dinner for a casual wedding - I just feel like having a real caterer that will plate and serve the meals will save you less stress than trying to arrange this pizza truck situation. Just my two cents.

ETA: Just saw from other other post that it is a 40-50 person wedding. Go for it, then. I just want to make sure you aren't stressing too much over the set-up.

I've been to two weddings like this. One was my sisters. They used the same vendor. I see you are on the central coast. Where? I'm in Fresno.

    Here is what they did:

    Wedding 1:

Backyard wedding, only about 50 attending.

Bride wore cocktail dress, groom a suit.

    No bridal party.

    Had cornhole, jenga, dj, photobooth

    Had open bar with bartender.

Had 5-6 options for pizzas, a couple of salad options and sides

vendor did app buffet as well.

The wait for food was not bad at all because it was so small.

    Wedding 2:

My sisters wedding, I was in the bp

    about 100 attended

    at venue, no games

    offered beer and wine, bartender

only offered a couple of pizza options, and side salad

vendor did app buffet as well.

dj released tables, so I don't think the wait was long.

My FSIL did this at her wedding. They brought the wood fired over to the reception. Prepped pizzas a head of time, popped them in the over and served them buffet style. I think they had a few different types of pizza too and of course salad and some other finger foods. They served 280 ppl I believe and things went fine. I think it's super cute to include that memory on your day so if you can find someone to cater for that then awesome!

Our venue (a restaurant) does wood-fired pizzas and they are delicious! We wanted a little more formal for the dinner, but we chose a few for our cocktail hour.

FH's uncle has a wood burning pizza oven outside and we were there this weekend. There were about 20 people and it was done quicker than we could keep up with, even cooking one pizza at a time.

We're looking at a venue in Atascadero and are only inviting 50 people (anticipating 40-50 in attendance). Bethyonce, very much like your first example above. No bridal party, etc. Ranch/barn feel but reception outdoors. Caterer says pizzas each take 90 seconds to cook so I don't think it will be too bad.

How many pizzas can they fit in the oven at once? 90 seconds X 50 people is an hour and 15 minutes. Talk to the caterer and ask how quickly your entire party can be served. Sounds like a lovely and yummy idea.

I went to a wedding were it was pizza for dinner and the pizza was good, but like a PPs said, it was delayed because the pizza was taking so long to cook.. What about having a more formal dinner and having pizza for a late night snack.

We are having a plated meal for dinner and around 10pm we will have pizza on the wood burning pizza oven at our venue.
