Thoughts on cupcakes?

Lacey, on December 28, 2016 at 1:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 45

Are they seen as tacky at a wedding in addition to a cake? Personally, I am a fan as using cupcakes allows for a wide variety of flavors. I also think they're cute. I would be ordering them from a specialty cupcake shop, not Costco or a grocery store.

Cupcakes have been so much easier at weddings I've attended. You could even get cute little boxes for people to take home extras leftover at the end of the night.

I love cupcakes. BUT keep in mind they're messier to eat. With everyone being in their nicer clothes they'll probably use a fork to eat them anyways which then defeats the purpose. Like @OHP said they're usually not any cheaper than getting a cake anyways

Just some things to keep in mind Smiley smile

I'm having them, because I need Vegan cake and I have a place in town that I want to order from, it's cheaper from her to get cupcakes than an actual cake. FH really wants cupcakes, he doesn't ask for much so I'll let him pick out the cake he wants. Nbd to me lol

Cupcakes are a great dessert idea in addition to or instead of cakes! You can be creative with your dessert offerings!

This is very much a personal preference thing. I love cupcakes, but I hate them at a wedding. To me, cupcakes very much say kid's birthday party, no matter how much you dress them up.

That said, I would recommend not going overboard on flavors, either. Most guests are going to want to try two or three if you are doing cupcakes, so you will need to account for that when you are ordering.

We are doing a 3-tier cake even though our guest list is 30. It's just a look we loved and are willing to splurge on. Each tier will be a different flavor, and we will be cutting all three tiers. We will still have some flavor variety even with a regular cake.

I'm doing a dessert bar (including cupcakes and other mini desserts) because we have some important guests with allergies and strong food dislikes and people can pick and choose what they'd like to eat. Also, my fiancé really wanted cupcakes and this was one of the few things he's had a strong opinion about.

I do wish we were doing a huge wedding cake. Cupcakes don't scream wedding to me and they aren't cheaper - I think we're actually paying more because of the labor intensive work of mini desserts and if we had done a cake it would have been a simple design.

Cupcakes actually can run cheaper than the cake depending on how many you want. I'm having both, and the cupcakes will be different flavors such as carrot cake or german chocolate (my mother and fiance insist lol). We're doing it because it's cheaper than adding another tier to feed 20 people. More than likely the baker will make the cupcakes match the cake in decorative style, so it doesn't have to scream "birthday party." It'll also make the cake table look fuller if that's a concern.

I hate cupcakes. Every time I've had them at an event they're dry. I always, deep down, think the people who provide cupcakes are just cheap. I think it's INCREDIBLY tacky to give cupcakes and still have a cutting cake for their photos.

However, I think I might be in the minority for this opinion, so take it for what you will. Cupcakes are just what you make for a birthday party because you want to cheap out.

I'm doing cupcakes our wedding is in Vegas and I figure it's easier since we don't intend to take any cake with us on the plane ride home. We will do a simple cake to cut.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with them, cake is cake no matter the size. Personally I am not a fan of cake, and FH is gluten intolerant so we are going to have mini cheesecakes (the crusts will be GF graham crackers on some) in a few flavors and then a cutting one that is a little bigger. The company that we are ordering them from have become a tradition in our circle of friends to get deserts from for big events so we already know that people will be expecting us to have them. We had a small cake to cut and then mini cupcakes and mini pies for our guests. We served BBQ food though, so the whole wedding was a bit more on the casual side.

I agree that cupcakes- while awesome- don't belong at a formal wedding. If the wedding is more laid back, go for it. But if you're having the cake-cutting for photos, I'd provide actual cake as dessert then.

I say they arent. They are the new thing. My cupcake tier will have a small cake on top and I'm having three different kinds. It's not tacky if made elegant and for guests it's much easier to grab a cupcake and have a kind they like.

Cupcakes can be classy and elegant and not so much like a child's birthday party. I have been to many weddings; some that had cake and some that had cupcakes. Honestly, while cake is good, I have seen cupcakes be more popular among guest. My sister had cake at her wedding, but by the time it was served to the tables, people just left the slices sitting there. My aunt had cupcakes at her wedding of all kinds of flavor a and they were all gone by the end of the night.

I'm not saying cupcakes are better than cake because I literally love both, but they are definitely a good choice for weddings.

@Melissa: I see you ignored where I said it was personal preference.

Also, even on the occasion I use a boxed cake mix and canned frosting, they still look like they came from a bakery. Some people who bake at home actually *do* know how to do basic decorating on things like cupcakes.

Also, insulting people by making your "advanced motor skills" comment is incredibly offensive. I have a son who has cerebral palsy. Even when he is an adult, it will be very unlikely he would be able to easily eat something as simple as a cupcake without it getting messy. Making fun of people with disabilities is not funny, it's just an incredibly ignorant and cruel thing to say.

@Danyl: Cupcakes are not the "new thing," they are one of the OLD "things" finally beginning to die out. The cupcake trend was just starting when I married XH 15 years ago, and I am very thankful that it is slowly starting to die out, while simultaneously horrified it is being replaced by those abhorrent little cake pops.
