Thoughts on a drone at my wedding?

Jessie, on January 21, 2017 at 5:01 AM Posted in Planning 0 38

Hi! We are thinking about using a drone to capture certain aspects of my wedding. Does anyone have experience using a drone at their wedding and/or reception? If so, what was your experience like? Do you have any suggestions before we decide in a definite direction? Did you hire a photographer/videographer with this in mind, or how did you accomplish this? My fiancé has some experience with some small drone things and he really likes this idea but before i make the decision, I would love to hear your thoughts on the experience as a whole.

I don't have any drone experience, but I have seen them used for aerial shots at weddings which I thought looked really cool.

What are you thinking of using it for?

I would definitely still hire a photographer no matter what- a drone can't replace that.

You have to jump through a couple of hoops to even own one (it has to get registered with I think the FCC). Drones also can't be used within a certain distance of an airport. Keep those things in mind. And @Fitz is absolutely right...a drone can't replace an experienced photographer.

I WANTED SO BADLY to have one at ours but the quote we got for filmography was ridiculously expensive, like the starting rate is $5,000! A drone shot is so freaking cool to see, especially if you're having an outdoor venue. I'd totally go for it if I had the budget.

Our videographers had a drone! We had an indoor ceremony, so they obviously didn't use it during that. But we got some really cool footage of the outside area for our wedding video.

The shots look cool, no doubt, but I'm not sure it's worth it. A friend of ours has one and asked if we wanted shots and we declined- not our style, and we didn't want the hassle of dealing with him the day of.

I mean it sounds like a cool idea because they would probably get come great shots, but hearing a drone flying around during our ceremony would drive me absolutely nuts...and I'm sure the guests would be paying more attention to that instead of listening to the vows. Just my opinion :-)

I agree. The concept is cool but it sounds distracting

Make sure you check with your venue, some don't even allow them (which I didn't know). The videographer we hired has a drone. His videos all have some awesome outside, overhead shots of the venue. I believe they film it before it the ceremony so it's not distraction.

I'd find it creepy and distracting.....and there is no way this replaces experienced pros.

I saw a video once of a drone accidentally being flown into the bride and knocking her out. Now that's all I think of when I think of drones at weddings lol.

You can get some awesome shots to be sure, but PP bring up good points about checking with your venue and having to register it. I'd personally find it distracting and not worth it. I'd like to also ask, who would be in charge of it? If the photographer doesn't know how to use it, would a guest help him instead of enjoying cocktail hour? It just seems like a hassle to me.

When you go to our venues website they have a wedding video from a previous wedding on the opening page. There are a lot of drone shots, primarily of the area. They look like they were shot a day other than the wedding. It cuts between those and actual wedding footage. It's a nice video.

My cousin proposed on a beach and the engagement was captured with a drone and I thought it was amazing. I have no idea what he paid for that.

I wouldn't have wanted one. I find them creepy and loud and obnoxious

My sister got married last summer and her videographer had a drone. He only used it prior to the ceremony to get shots of the ceremony and reception area while no one was there...but it was put away during the ceremony. They only took it out and got some video of the bridal party walking from the ceremony while we were taking pictures, again totally okay because it wasn't during the actually ceremony or reception. But they are loud and distracting so NOT during anything important

Our videographers flew a drone. It turned out super cool! He didn't fly it during the ceremony so no distractions.

I wanted a drone...then I found out they were loud and therefore didn't record sound. At that point I determined it was kind of pointless.

I say it really depends on your venue. Some venues have amazing landscapes that go on for acres. Others...well, the venue looks great, but the surrounding area doesn't.

If you find a photographer or videographer who offers it and it isn't much more, I say go for it. If your FH decides to buy a drone as an overall hobby, I say talk to your venue and see if you can take some aerial shots that morning or a few days before. If it's not super convenient though, I wouldn't worry about it.

This is an interesting question for DC brides. My photographer was told they couldn't fly one within city limits for our engagement shoot. Anyone heard different?

There's a videographer company I found here on WW that specializes in drone shots. The price was surprisingly inexpensive!
