Hi! We are thinking about using a drone to capture certain aspects of my wedding. Does anyone have experience using a drone at their wedding and/or reception? If so, what was your experience like? Do you have any suggestions before we decide in a definite direction? Did you hire a photographer/videographer with this in mind, or how did you accomplish this? My fiancé has some experience with some small drone things and he really likes this idea but before i make the decision, I would love to hear your thoughts on the experience as a whole.

You can buy drones at Walmart for $100. They are kinda hard to fly though. Takes practice. You have a few months to practice. Maybe see if a friend will practice and take a couple cool pics during the cocktail hour

I have no idea about the legal requirements or anything like that, but my husband's cousin's husband actually did have a drone and used it on our wedding day, while getting ready/guests arriving/right before the wedding started. I didn't even know he used it! I didn't hear it or see it or anything. When I saw the video, I thought it was so cool to have Smiley smile But again, I don't know what's required to use one at an event or venue; just wanted to share that it can be neat seeing a wedding from that view.

Our videographer is $2200 for the whole day including a couple blu-rays and use of his drone as he sees fit. There's a lot of clearance to try and get to make sure you can use a private drone in specific areas (especially if it has recording capabilities).

The one thing our videographer mentioned is that it is REALLY LOUD (sounds a bit like a swarm of bees), so it won't be used during our ceremony, but we're thinking of having our first dance outside for a couple fly-over shots.

In short, its neat, but you've got to make sure you have the proper clearances.

Our photographer comes with a drone, which is one of the big reasons we chose him. I wanted a drone to get pictures with since we picked our venue. However, it is just to pull still pictures from, we decided against doing videography. But our venue has a lot of really awesome scenery, including a waterfall that can't be shot directly from the front without the use of a done. We're super stoked.

We use a drone at a lot of the weddings we film. As many others have said, I highly highly recommend not flying the drone during your ceremony. They are way too loud, and everyone will be too busy looking up that they'll ignore the ceremony. We typically only use our drone to capture the scenery of the venue at the very beginning of the wedding day, during dinner when people are inside, or time permitting with just the couple.

It's definitely something to consider if your venue is in an amazing location. But know that some venues have rules against the use of drones, so it's best to find that out in advance. It's also worth noting that drones cannot be flown within 5 miles of an airport. We always tell our couples that drone coverage is weather permitting, we can't fly in the snow, rain, or high winds.

If you do decide you want one, I recommend saving the head ache and hiring a professional.

I think if the better part of your reception is outside, it might be nice, but if not, it may be more hassle then it's worth.

Personally, it didn't really matter to me as only our ceremony is outside, but our venue is on a school campus and less than a mile from an airport, so we didn't really have the opportunity to think about wanting one.

We would have added it if we could afford it. Our videographer offers it for $900 but we couldn't justify that with our limited budget. Ours would have arrived early and used the drone to take venue footage earlier than the ceremony. Then while the ceremony is taking place and all his cameras are where they need to be, he would have taken the drone for a spin above the ceremony. He would have stood behind the guests and his drone doesn't make much noise so the distraction would only be actually seeing the drone. We really wanted one because of our venue (outdoors) but I have seen people use drone footage to document the outside of the building (and parking lot) for an indoor wedding and that makes no sense to us. So depending on venue and budget, you guys can make the call on if it's something you want.

1). Check with your venue to see if drones are even allowed on the property.

2). The person operating it has to have it registered/FCC paperwork. If not what they are doing is illegal.

3). If you decide to have someone use it make sure they have liability insurance and ask for a certificate.

4). You should be insured as well.

We will be having one but our videographer did they will not be using it during the vows because he said it would be a distraction for guests especially since it buzzes. We will have it during the first look and formal pictures and the outdoor cocktail hour.

You may want to check to see if your venue will allow it. I recently heard of a woman being injured by one at a wedding. The venue told the groom several times it wasn't allowed, prior to the wedding.

First thing you need to figure out is, can the drone be flown in the area where your event is. Because if it is not allowed some drones like the DJIs won't even lift off the ground.

The shots are great, but you have to be very careful to keep it within the laws (one thing to remember is that they can't be close to airports).

I know a couple people who've gotten in trouble with the law because either people have reported them as privacy encroachment or they have disregarded a law for getting them registered.

Ours comes with the videography package. I had no idea about them being loud. I will be sure to make sure it isn't used during the ceremony

We are just starting to offer drone photography and videography in the UK and it does certainly seem popular. Shots of all of the guests and the bride and groom together are nice, as are shots in strong locations of just the happy couple. Loads of options.

If anyone has any tips or experiences, I'd love to hear about them as they have been used in the US a little more extensively than here. www.droneconsulting.eu
