Those with international guests - how are you handling invitations?

Lauren R., on March 21, 2015 at 12:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 16

My FH has a few relatives overseas that he would like to invite and I am hesitant to send them paper invitations, but an email seems so informal. Do you think it is worth the expense? Will the invitations even make it? And what do we do for return postage for the RSVPs?

I sent one to my aunt in Brazil, I had to pay a little more to send it but not too much. It hasn't made it there yet but I'm sure it will. As far as return postage, she said she would figure it out because I didn't know either.

I sent a few to Canada. I remembered to get Canadian postage for the invites, but I forgot about the RSVPs. I ended up adding a page on our website "For Canadian guests" with our phone numbers/email for RSVP, but most of the responses came through family members anyway. I think it depends on where you are sending them and how reliable the mail is.

They're going to Germany, but it's a fairly small town there, so who knows? I guess I'll cross my fingers and see what happens.

I mailed invited to Japan, it only cost $1.00 more. I did not put postage on the inner envelope as it would be pointless unless in the currency of the country you are mailing it to. I did let my friend know to e-mail/text with RSVP as easier for everyone.

We're sending them invitations, but we won't have them rsvp by mail most likely, probably just email.

Depending on where you mean by 'overseas', I would mail them. We mailed them to our family in the UK and they arrived with no issues. If you are doing paper RSVP's though you'll want to have a second plan for international guests, please usually ask them to email or use the website to RSVP instead.

Edit: just saw your comment that they are going to Germany. I send mail to different parts of Germany a couple times each year and it arrives fine. Just know that it will cost a bit more and it will take a bit longer to get there.

We're inviting one from China, one from Germany, one from Australia, and one from South Africa. The ones in China (who I know is coming) and South Africa (who I know isn't coming) have asked us to send just an email with pictures of our invitations. The ones from Germany and Australia are going to give us their addresses, we'll include a note in there to email us to RSVP.

We sent an invitation to denmark. the only issue we had was the amount of postage to provide on the response card. the post office couldn't tell me how much return postage would be required. i don't understand why... but they sent us a response email instead of sending the response card back anyway. we had no issues on mailing the invite though.

We sent Save-the-Dates to anyone over seas already. They're definitely aware of who, what, where, when, and why lol. So if I don't hear from those who we sent them to within the next 2 months, I'll be sure to email them and fill them in. Invitations will still be sent to them about a month before anyone else. This is also why a wedding website really helps.

Most of our invites were posted internationallly as we live abroad. Yes definitely worth the expense! Its not much in the scheme of things. I requested all rsvps by email. Worked great. Then I had everyones email addresses so could easily update everyone with last minute details and info.

Yes, about $1.10 for regular weight. I have mailed cards to Europe and Australia. The only place I have difficulty with mail is Greece.

We sent a Save the Date and Invitation to FH father in Japan, we just paid for the international postage and he got them just fine. If you are doing RSVP cards they will have to pay for postage back but it should not be that bad

Don't worry, Germany has a very efficient postal system.

A lot of my postage is going to Barbados and India. Because I frequent Barbados a lot I was able to purchase postage in preparation the last time I was there. Unfortunately I could not do that for India so I will be placing my phone number, email address and a link to our website on the invites so people have several ways of RSVPing
