Those moving after the wedding, Gift registry idea??

Gee O. aka Happily Wifed Up, on March 28, 2012 at 4:07 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

If your are moving to a different country after your wedding, how are you setting up your gift registry if you are having one? Have you found American stores that would ship to your future country location? If yes, which? I am moving to Canada and looking for stores that would ship gifts to Canada?

Also when is it too late to make up gift registry for your wedding?

I'm not sure if this post will help or not but I read this on my favorite wedding related blog the other day:

    http://www.loveandlobster.com/2012/favorite-things/merci-registry/

It's about an nontraditional registry website that allows you to register for almost anything. It was created by a couple who was moving to Paris after they got married.

Oh wow, I need to take a seat and really go through this. It already makes me feel like I am creating a new website all over again. Lol--i would look at it this evening though, this might just be what i need. Thanks Shannon!

Hahahahah! i just saw you pay 30$ to make a registry and instantly i hit the red X on the right hand side of the window. LoL! i would really like to not pay for a registry too...hopefully something out there exists and costs $0. lol

My MOH was moving immediately after her wedding, so she had her registries set up to ship to our parents house. They held on to everything until she got settled into their new house. Would that be a possibility? Maybe your parents or FH's or even your MOH?

You can do the same thing for free by using Amazon's Universal Registry.

Basically - you can cut/paste any item sold on any website into your central Amazon Registry. The only hitch is, people buy directly from the retailers not from Amazon, so there's no thank-you manager or guarantee that you're not going to get a lot of duplicates.

We're moving after the wedding but we're moving back to our house b/c we're living temporarily out of state right now. So we just kept our registry very small and specific to table/kitchenware, and most of it is being shipped to the house in Denver. We did include some things like luggage that our friends have kindly had shipped to our temporary home here, b/c they know we're going to use it right away.

Oh Kris you are right, that might really suck getting duplicates. I think our last resort will be to wait till may till we are 100% sure on who is moving and have the registry made there but that is why I asked the question, when is it too late to put up your registry? Our wedding is in June.

    Are you having a shower?

I don't think it's too late at all. People will probably start asking where you're registered in the next month or two. At least you know nothing would be discontinued!

Also - we have a Crate and Barrel registry and we still got 3 duplicates of an item that shows up as us only having one. So things happen. It's NBD. When you have a registry I think it's maybe easier to return things. But most stores take back items for store credit nowadays, I would just know the individual retailers' policies so you don't get stuck with stuff and see if they will ship to Canada.

While I'm not moving to a different country, I am moving from Maryland to California just 2 weeks after the wedding. I didn't do anything special but I would just look for major stores that are in both the united states and canada. Macy's is not in Canada, but they do ship there; Sears has stores in Canada as does Target and Walmart. So you should have a few options. You could also just do an exclusively online registry at a Canadian Department store and explain on your website why it's a weird store.

    Hahahah!

thanks ladies! Nicnac for some reason i wasnt able to get macy's to ship to Canada for me, even though I know they regularly do that, so I am not sure why it wont work for gift registry. But i sure will put in the other stores and see.

    Thanks!

Huh, interesting. Maybe you should try calling their customer service department to see if you can set that up.

Here is the website for sears canada:

    http://www.sears.ca/

    Target Canada:

    http://www.target.ca/en/

    Walmart Canada:

    http://www.walmart.ca/en

It looks like there is no specific registry for walmart in canada but you should be able to have things shipped there. I couldn't find anything like that for target but I would suggest calling there too just to be sure.

Just a heads up, Target is coming to Canada, but is not available in most major centres yet.

Crate and Barrel though does have stores in the Greater Toronto area, Calgary and Edmonton, so that might be an option along with other stores that people have mentioned.

Stay away! Their site had issues and they were down during the 2 days right after we sent our wedding invitations out. They apologized and offered either an additional free registry or a refund. We requested the refund, but they told me that it was too late now, and wrote me a very passive aggressive email. During the days it was down, our family and friends tried to use it, and were frustrated when it didn't work -- I had to go in after the fact and add gifts in to keep track, and so that anyone who *did* go to the site would know what had been gifted. They told me that because I had gone in after the fact and used the site, that their original offer didn't stand anymore. I was appalled at their awful, awful customer service.
