Thank you note: extra postage

Anne, on July 16, 2017 at 2:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

I'm finally getting around to writing thank you notes that I ordered from Etsy months ago. I opened the package and the envelopes are tiny. They are 3.5 x 5 to be exact. I know if an envelope is irregular size or too large it requires special postage. Does anyone know if that applies to small envelopes too? I don't want to waste my time and money on these if they need special postage.

Thank you!

The only thing less than a letter ($.49) is a postcard at $.34. So unless you are using postcards (no envelope) then there are no cheaper options.

I'm not trying to go cheaper. I am putting forever stamps on the envelope. My question is because the envelopes are so small will the post office return them all for more than regular postage. Sorry if I was unclear

I think they should be fine. Might be worth stopping in the post office with one to ask before you stick postage on them though!

A normal stamp should be perfect. But you can always ask at the post office to give yourself some peace of mind.

I would ask them directly. USPS always surprises me when I assume something about them.

My cards were 4x6 and regular stamps were fine.

I sent thank you notes with small envelopes out last week with regular forever postage and none were returned to me.

I recommend asking the postal service. My rsvp cards were pretty small and the postal clerk checked the size to be sure no issues with machine handling.

Good news is im running out of stamps so I'll hold off on getting postage for the remainder til I get an expert opinion from the post office.

    Thank you

Oh! I get it. Forever postage should be absolutely fine. Regardless of what you paid for them they are always worth whatever the current first class (normal letter) rate is, that is what makes them so cool. You are good to go.

3.5 x 5 is the minimum size (the last I heard)

@Jaylynn - the problem actually comes with the processing of the address. The stamps hold a value, but some size or orientations for envelopes might cost more to go through machines.

For example, when I sent out STDs, the envelopes were standard birthday card size. But since they opened along the short side, I addressed them that way (portrait orientation.)

Because of that, they were considered a large envelope, and I needed extra postage on something that would have cost one stamp if the address were oriented in landscape.

My rsvps were that size and they all came back just fine with a regular forever stamp. You should be good to go!

@KittyPrawn - Yep. I get it. The minimum size is 3.5x5 so size (if that is the concern) is also not an issue for OP.

I just sent out STD magnets in 3.5 x 5 envelopes and it was regular postage.
