Thank You Card

Imani, on June 28, 2022 at 10:50 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18
My boss’s, boss got us a gift from our registry. He already informed me that he would not be attending our wedding due to his family trip. Should I get him a thank you card now or wait until after the wedding?

I would send a thank you card now! That way, he knows the gift was received, and it's one less thank you card that you'd have to write later.

Thanks Lisa! Just wanted to be sure. ! I’ll get it today & write it in and put it in his inbox since he’s out this week.

I read somewhere that gifts given before the wedding should be thanked no more than 2 weeks from receiving. After the wedding, you can take up to 3 months.
Also to echo Lisa, it helps the person know that their item did safely arrive in your hands. Packages can get lost or misdelivered, so the gift-giver would want to know if they need to call customer service or cancel for a refund.

Oh perfect! Because I do want him to know we received it. So that works out. I’ll definitely get the card today. Thank you Erin!

Definitely now. Have some generic wedding thank you's on hand for that situation,

I was thinking about maybe making one on Canva and printing it out on cardstock paper and writing on the back of it. Here are a few ideas. Thank You Card 1
    Thank You Card 2

Send a thank you note now. Always send them when you receive the gifts. However do not open or use the gifts until after the wedding.

Thanks Michelle! I am going to order more thank you cards just in case we get other gifts. I didn’t know we couldn’t open them or use them until after the wedding. We did open the box but we hadn’t used it. Thank you for letting me know.

Oh I’m opening and using them as they come in. I don’t have the space to store these boxes around my house 😂😂

Here’s a list of what you can and should not do with reasoning behind the etiquette:

Yep, I like that idea! Canva is fun! As long as the gift is acknowledged, all good.

    You can do either.

The perk of doing it now is it's timely, they know your gift was received, and it's one less thing to worry about/do after the wedding. You'll likely be writing a LOT of thank you's after the wedding!

The only real reason I would consider waiting is if you plan on doing thank you cards with a photo from your wedding. I really like those and think it can be an extra nice treat for those who couldn't attend. We ended up using two wedding photos on our thank you cards and they came out really nice, but we waited for our entire wedding photo gallery to be delivered to us from our photographers and then had to order the cards so it meant our thank you's didn't go out until a few months after the wedding. Most photographers have a 6-8 week turnaround for wedding photos (some longer), although if your photographer does sneak peaks and you ask them, they might send you a hi-res photo you can use for your cards right away so that you don't have to wait as long to get them printed and sent out.

You can also send a thank you now and follow up with a photo later if you want.

Having sent out mass thank you's for our wedding, our wedding celebration (postponed due to Covid), and a baby shower all within the past couple years I can say my preference would be to send thank you's immediately just because power writing dozens of thank you cards at once just gets exhausting. Checking them off your to-do list as you go just feels easier to me.

I've been sending thank-yous as we receive gifts, whether for wedding or shower. Then I don't have to think about it later, and one less to worry about! Smiley smile
