Thank You Card Wording for Money

Brittany, on June 7, 2021 at 10:02 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 2 5

Hello!! So we just had my bridal shower. I am half way through writing my thank you cards, but I am stuck on two types of wording. I want to make sure they know we are grateful for their gift, we aren't 100% sure what we're spending the money on. Probably just going to put it in a savings account and use it toward buying a new house.

Anyway, we have a few people that sent us a check with their regrets that they cannot come to the wedding. I'm doing these thank you cards with my bridal shower thank yous so we get them out. Not sure how to word that though. Plus one lady that sent gifts to the shower, but couldn't make that or the wedding. They are not people we see often either so it's not like we can say "can't wait to see you at the next ____".

The other thank you is for people that attended the shower and gave cash as a gift with a card. Anywhere from $15 - $20 was gifted and I'm not sure what to put in the thank you note. I know with these people I can say, "can't wait to see you at the wedding/big day/celebration, etc."

I have a similar situation I think I’m going to say thank you so much for your generous gift we truly appreciate it. We hope you are all doing well and staying safe and healthy! Take care! Maybe add a Covid touch just to end the card I think that’s what I’m going to write because I’m not going to being seeing those guests either who declined and sent gifts I think short and sweet just showing your appreciation will be a nice thank you card!

    I usually use something like:

"Thank you so much for the generous $XX check! We are thankful you are thinking of us and we can't wait to use it as we prepare our new house/save for a honeymoon/buy a new home/get ready to move/etc. Looking forward to seeing you at the wedding! OR We will miss celebrating with you at the wedding, but hope to get together soon. Have a wonderful summer/etc"

I always put exactly what the gift was in the thank you (even if it's cash) so they know we're writing non-generic thank you's. You don't have to list the amount if you dont' want, but i'd at least say "check or cash" rather than just "gift".

I would just say thank you so much for the thoughtful/generous gift/check/cash and that you appreciate them thinking of you! You don't need to specify what you are using the money for, but if you feel the need just pick something you know you will spend money on that sounds nice - like a vacation for example. It doesn't really matter whether the exact $50 bill gifted to you pays your utility bill, is handed to someone at a spa, or buys you cocktails on an island getaway.

If you are given cash or a check, I would use the terms cash, money, or check, but you don't have to state the amount. If you are given a physical gift its good to mention what the actual gift is. I don't think you need to go crazy with customizing each thank you - its important to mention anything that stood out (you loved the card, the gift is exactly what you wanted, you are so excited to do this with your gift, etc) but you don't have to force it.

I would just keep it short and sweet and say thank you for sending the money! We really appreciate it! It will be put to good use Smiley smile love, so and so

Any thank you card I’ve gotten has been like 1-2 sentences and it’s really just the thought that counts and the appreciation you have and the acknowledgment that you sent something. People really don’t expect you to write a whole novel!

Thank you for the advice! The four of you have helped a ton! I basically did a mix of everything you guys suggested based on the circumstance. Smiley laugh
