Thank you card and condolence message?

A friend of mine's parent recently passed away unexpectedly, and through it all she found time to send us a wedding gift (a check, bless her). When writing the thank you note, is it crass to acknowledge her parent's passing in the card? Or more appropriate to send two cards, a condolence card and thank you card at the same time? Thank you.
