Tanning?

amanda, on January 4, 2011 at 3:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

I'm super white..like I can't play hide and seek because I glow white! My dress is strapless and I really need a good tan..should I tan in a bed? Or should I try to find somewhere and spray tan? I know the spray will be less harmful, but come on ladies it's my wedding the sky is the limit...any advice?

I am hitting the bed, if you decide on a spray test do it months in advance to make sure it works for you. Some peoples skin makes it appear to have patches or spots and don't hold it well.

When i went down to Cali for past summer (to meet my FWs family) I had to be tan (cuz like you i GLOW) I tanned in high pressure beds for 2 weeks (so about 6 or 7 times all through out the 2 weeks) I then 3 days before we left got a spray tan (which the one i went to had me lay in a high pressure bed first to open my pores and to make sure it didnt look tacky) By the time i got down there it was perfect. I wasnt orange or anything. So i would say do both. Just start a few weeks before your wedding day. And if you get a spray tan (mine was Airbrush, that way i had no lines anywhere) Make sure that you have someone do it so you know that no spots will be missed.

I already started tanning for my wedding. I prefer beds/stand up. I don't want spray going up my nose and stuff...yuckky.

I definitely wouldn't get a spray tan right off the bat. With how white you are it will probably look orange. If you've never tanned before you should try tanning in a bed or booth. Start out slow though if you've never used one. I'm actually allergic to tanning in tanning beds, but not the booth, that's why I recommend starting slow. Another thing to think about is that you should probably start ASAP since it may take some time to get the color you want. Definitely don't wait until the month of your wedding and then start tanning.

David Tutero says that "tans look funny on a bride". I think I kind of dig the porcelain skin in a wedding gown. The wrong fake tan can really look bad (and orange).

I'm pretty pale - especially in the winter time. I do the mystic tan before any major events and I like the look. I don't look orange or too tan - just a glow.

I'm going to do a spray on test run so I can see what it looks like with my dress when it gets here next month. This way it will have time to fade if I dont like it. Dont want to look like an Umpa Lumpa on my wedding day. lol

I agree with Heather. If you are going to do it though, I recommend checking into the spray tans that are applied by a person, not a machine. For my brothers wedding, my 2 sisters and I all got fake tans and my oldest sister used the spray tan that was applied by a person and it looked great. My other sister and I used Mystic tan and while it looked fine, the other looked better. Do a test run, for sure. I'm so white I'm clear and tanning from a bed or a sun is just not possible. I burn... then go white again. Smiley tongue

I love the beds! If you have time, start off in a low powered bed for like 7 or 8 minutes at a time a few times a week and work your way up. I'm very pale and started the low power bed 4 times a week for 7 minutes. Eventually I was going 5 times a week for 15-20 minutes. The people at the tanning salon can usually help you with a tanning lotion that will do good for you. I recommend Designer Skin Revival. Works wonders and smells yummy! If you don't have a lot of time, do the high powered beds but be careful because they can easily burn your booty!

No it won’t bleed. I just txt a friend that manages a salon and she said there is a clear lotion that you put on now that allows the color to last longer and not bleed off. You won’t want to spray the same day, maybe a couple days before you have the dress on.

I highly recommend HSN's Tan Towels!

I used them all last summer and everyone thought I had the best tan! (I can't be in the sun for long periods of time b/c it interacts with my medication and I get a serious rash- found out the hard way!)

I did the bed. I went for only 5 mins 3 times a week. Any other sun I got outdoors I had on sunblock. I've heard your body should have 5 mins of unblocked sun perday. SO I figured 5 mins 3x a week and sunblock after that was ok. I will be doing the same thing before our honeymoon.

I just got my first mystic tan...steam yourself beforehand to open your pores, exfoliate well, and moisturize. I loved it....I have been called ghostly. It was very natural and actually they gave me the lightest tan shade and I liked it a lot...I'm not sure about my hubby but to me, I liked it because I felt it made me a look a bit more slim... On me, the tan lasted over a week, with the optimal results on the second day.

I'm just going to say this once, and people can justify it all they want, but: tanning increases cancer risk. The younger you are, and the more you do it, the more likely it is that you will develop malignant melanoma, which can kill you. Frankly, I just don't see it as an acceptable trade-off.

Many people think that tanning gives you a protective "base," but that's not true. It just masks skin damage--your skin gets the harmful UV whether it is visibly burned or not.

Outside the US/North America, tanning beds are much more regulated and you have to be at least 18 to use them--basically, they're treated like cigarettes. As they should be.

And finally, if it would just be for the wedding... why look different in your wedding than you do all the rest of the time?

The FH and I always tan before we vacation. However, we are having serious debate about tanning for the wedding. First, when the FH tans, he winds up being profiled on an airplane. It is not attractive. When I tan, I completely cover my face to prevent wrinkles, and get freckles on my chest area. So, we are hoping to just have a natural glow from summer riding.

Spray tanning or airbrush spray tanning is safe, so I hear.

I would avoid the tanning beds at all costs.

I am tanning for the wedding. I go for 15 minues once a month just to keep a little color, I started in December. You don't want to look overdone or orange, just a little glow. I use a good tanning lotion that makes the tan last longer. And it feels amazing in this cold weather!!

Oh and not to hijack the post, but anyone know how to get rid of tan lines?? I was working outside last summer in a tank top and burned really bad, now I have strap lines. I thought they would slowly go away during the winter months when I wasn't getting sun, but not this year!

I won't get on a soap box and tell people the dangerous effects of tanning, because we are all adults who are smart enough to know it is not good for us. I will share a story. My 24 year old daugher worked in a tanning salon since she was 15. Last year, when she graduated college, she stopped working there. So, when she worked, she tanned for free. Guess who had 5 spots on her body? She now lives in Florida and spray tans on a regular basis. Thankfully, it was not at a serious stage.

And...mom still tans to go to on vacation. Smiley smile

Scandy here, so I'm pasty. Plus I have red hair so the pastiness is ok. If I get a natural tan the summer before I get married, then I'll do a spray tan to try to even it all out but if not, then I'm not going to. I burn once, then tan throughout the rest of the summer. I have this whole fear of cancer so I stay away from beds.
