Taking left over food & cake?

M&SC, on March 26, 2016 at 11:54 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

We had our final meeting with our planner & she told us that if we want to take home the left over food & cake to just being supplies to pack it up. Is it normal to take these things home? I didn't even consider it before. She made it sound like most couples choose to do this.

I've looked into a lot of venue's and most of them let you do this. Some charge for containers, others just let you take it and go.

It depends on the venue. Is she an in house planner or an independent? Caterer or in house food service? That will make a difference.

In order to take our leftovers we would have had to sign a waiver and pay a $100 fee for the containers and for servers to pack it up. We said no thanks.

I mean I do love cake! The planner & caterer are in house. I know I'm already paying for all of it, I just didn't know if it was tacky lol. I guess not! Cake for days!

We took ours. Honestly, to me I was paying for it so I wasn't about to just leave it there. We sent some with those who stayed until the end and helped us pack the decor and gifts into the car (basically the BP and my aunt). Then we sent one tray of pasta to my husbands work (via a co-worker who stopped by) and took the cake home. There was a pretty day the day after the wedding and a bunch of our neighbors were out on their porches so we made up little plates and played cake fairy (we hadn't been in our house long enough to invite neighbors to the wedding plus the people who were out were elderly). Then we had cake to eat for the next few days and that was really nice since it was amazing!

Personally, I would have felt really bad seeing all that food go to waste.

We can take all left over food, as long as we bring our own containers. Crap. Need to add that to my list. Going to amazon right now....

We took ours. I don't know who actually did, but we had it!! Many guests were staying at the same hotel as us and the beef was there in our after-party area and people were snacking on it lol.

We had two tiers that didnt end up getting cut into, so the middle tier was brought back and people ate some that night or the next day, and my BIL saved the top tier for my husband and I.

We had to go boxes for guests to take the leftover cake. Many people did and we boxed up the rest for us. Never discussed taking leftovers of the other food.

Nothing tacky about taking what you paid for. We were able to do that with all 4 dds weddings. For the last one I packed leftover steak kabobs, red skin garlic maxed potatoes, fresh fruit from display and some cheese in a cooler with drinks. Gave it to DD and new SIL the following morning at the hotel. They were so exhausted when they got to their mini moon destination and we're thrilled to have some good food when they got to their hotel.

Our venue is a restaurant/brewery so I asked what happened if there was leftover food. They said they would pack up 4-6 to-go containers for us to enjoy later if we wanted. I think it's a pretty typical thing as long as your caterer allows it.

Hadn't thought about anything but the cake. Will definitely ask at our tasting about this.

I bought little cake boxes so my guests can take home a piece of cake. I can't imagine anyone wanting to take the food.

We aren't allowed to take the food since it's been cooked, something about rules because it's already been prepared? They will pack us two dinners for later but I believe they are prepared differently and we'll be taking the cake because it's not from the venue.

Yes. Food that has been sitting out, and then may sit in your guests' cars for god knows how long?

Almost no caterer wants to deal with that liability risk.

We definitely want to do this, and did it at my sister's wedding! My dad was appalled at how much food was left after her very warm, humid fall wedding day. The weather killed peoples' appetites and it was heavy comfort food, so a LOT was left over. The relatives carted off big foil pans of entrees and some sides, and we had it as a big family dinner the next night. Dad begged the staff to take home what we couldn't carry, so it wouldn't get wasted.

I have heard from Celia and others on the forum that actually packing it to go FOR you is against health code or a liability risk, because it's been sitting out, will sit out while transported, etc. The compromise at some venues seems to be that the caterer leaves leftovers in the fridge, and what happens to them after that is not their problem.

I'm hoping it will be easy to save it at our wedding, as we're renting out multiple cottages with large kitchens and fridges on the premises. Should be easy enough to transfer the leftovers to them then dig in for lunch the next day.

Our venue's in-house caterer did not allow leftover food to be taken off premises. Staff packaged cake for us though.
