So we have decided to do a taco bar for the wedding. We live in New Mexico on the border so enough said Smiley winking We are looking at 150 people. I have ideas for how much quantity and everything but what I need to know is a generic price range for this. FH is going to make up all the meat and we will have a friend who is a caterer make the rest of the prep stuff the morning of so all I really need to know is about how much it will cost. How far out can I make homemade salsas and cut up toppings??

Why not wait until next year? It'd still be summertime. Also, you've been planning your wedding since you had been dating for only a month

I think it's a better /safer idea to ask the friend to handle all of the food. As others have mentioned, you will be very busy all day, and worrying about food will just be another stressor.

@athena Kay I get snarky when I'm passionate! I highly value the sanctity of marriage and I think people who "just know" and get married on a whim are sharting on the beauty that marriage is supposed to be! It's supposed to be a permanent thing (until death do we part/as long as we both shall live) I felt like I "knew" with FH and we started talking about marriage on the second date (even stranger I was 17 he was 18 at the time) but we knew that marriage was to be taken seriously and that's why we've waited nearly 4 years to tie the knot! I mean really, why hurry. If you feel like you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, that's great.... But make sure you know them first, long enough to adjust with at least one life change (even if it's fashion, superficial philosophy, etc) sure can you get to know someone in 5 months? Yeah. But will you have adjusted with some changes with them? Probably not. I mean fh learned pretty quick with me (I have a chronic condition) but I didn't see a life change with him until about a year in.

FOOD SAFETY. I'm not trying to be rude but dead honest. I think that in a wedding party that big, you are going to have to suck it up and pay a caterer. I would not suggest you running around like a chicken with your head cut off on the day of your wedding. I also would not suggest prep the ingredients ahead of time because especially because certain ingredients like tomatoes found in salsas are highly susceptible to causing food poisoning.

There was a story posted a few weeks ago about a church function where two died from botulism from incorrectly canned carrots.

Just hire a caterer and save yourself the hassle!

I like snarky jkr Smiley smile

I agree with you. I met FH when I was 18, he was 19, then we started dating. I knew within the first couple of months that he was probably the one. 6 1/2 years later, we are finally tying the knot Smiley smile

Whoops, it was canned potatoes not carrots. Still, don't self cater!

@OP I feel for you, it can feel defeating receiving a bunch of sarcastic or harsh comments on a post. However, you are coming on the internet putting out these sensational scenarios to a group of strangers. People also tend to be less guarded with how they respond to things online than in person. I recommend sticking to questions about centerpiece design, your wedding dress etc. From what I have learned in my short time here, avoid bringing up: self-catering, no alcohol, cash bars, ways to ask your guest for money, and BM drama, and now I'll add getting engaged after knowing the person for two months, and you'll be golden!

I'm just here to say that I am dying that mrs jkr very eloquently dropped "sharting" in her perfectly worded argument.

    Hahahahahahhaha @Simpleseamstress, seriously?

"Just don't' bring up shitty things that you do to other people and you'll be fine!"

You're aware there's not a big uproar b/c someone hit a button and said "BAD TOPIC," there's an uproar because the majority of people on here totally disagree with OP, and that should tell OP something. Lord almighty.

Don't cater it yourself because people who don't know how to cater things shouldn't try to feed 150 other people that they theoretically care about, in the summer, by making their own food on an important day. Because you'll have zero fun that day.

    Where's my wine?

YUMM! I agree that with that many people, you should not DIY this. How much can it cost to cater a taco bar?? Especially if you go with a local, authentic place? It can't be that much. Also, don't forget if you have any vegetarian guests you will want to offer some grilled peppers or something as an option for them.

You and FH should have a taco night and do the math on 1lb of meat.

    1lb of lean meat = 16 oz's

It will cook down to 13-14 oz's.

A taco takes about 2 ounces. = 6-7 tacos per lb.

Figure 3-4 taco's per person. I'd do 4 to be on the safe side. I assume your serving refried beans and rice or some other sides to help fill ppl up?

    4 taco's X 150 ppl = 600 tacos / 6 taco's per lb = 100 lbs of meat.

100 lbs of meat multiplied by price per lb = your cost.

In my area a pound of Angus lean meat is $7.50 lb. 7.50 X 100 = $750 for lean ground beef.

Yours may be more/less depending on the price per pound in your area.

    For the rest, figure out

How many tacos does one Tomato cover?

How many tacos does one head of lettuce cover? Cut up 1/4 head of lettuce, how many does it fill? multiply by 4 and you have how many tacos per head.

How many tacos does a bag of shredded cheese cover?

there are 2 cups in an 8oz bag. Use a 1/4 cup of cheese. How many tacos does it cover?

multiply by 4 and it gives you how many tacos per bag.

12 tacos come in a box, you will need at least 50 boxes. I'd buy more.

Find out the prices for each of these items in your area and multiply that by how many you need of each. You will need to do this for all items you use....salsa, sour cream, olives, etc....

    Thats where you start.

    OMG snarky ftw!

Seriously, don't DIY. That's a terrible idea. Just have your friend cater it.

2ndly- I'm going to have to agree that this is a FORUM not a support group. You can choose to post about heated topics on these boards, but you should not expect everyone to agree with you. The WW vets will however point out when some ideas are just bad ones, or offer other ideas to help you out.
