Taco Bar

maryjaneperkins11, on May 21, 2015 at 2:05 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 70

So we have decided to do a taco bar for the wedding. We live in New Mexico on the border so enough said Smiley winking We are looking at 150 people. I have ideas for how much quantity and everything but what I need to know is a generic price range for this. FH is going to make up all the meat and we will have a friend who is a caterer make the rest of the prep stuff the morning of so all I really need to know is about how much it will cost. How far out can I make homemade salsas and cut up toppings??

I really wouldn't suggest DIY for that amount of people... Do you have everything you need to keep it all warm (and not food poison everyone)? I mean if you need cheap options chipotle caters and the price for my area was $13.50 pp for the most inclusive option

You should know that self catering is very frowned upon here for many reasons. The biggest one being food safety concerns. It's totally different to cook/prep for a large dinner party vs 150 people.

Also, you might consider changing your avatar to something other than the rings picture, that's what all the trolls use who come here to spam or stir shit up for their own amusement.

You should ask your friend the caterer to handle the meat if he is already doing the rest of the stuff.

A few months ago I spend maybe $150 making a taco bar for 30 people and we had some left over. That was only beef, no other meat options but lots of other fixings. I cannot imagine cooking for 5x that many people for my wedding! I would get some quotes for restaurants to cater your taco bar. It probably won't be that much more $ but will be a lot less stress.

I would definitely ask your caterer friend about doing ALL of the work, rather than you and FH preparing meat, salsas, etc.

It will be a huge stress relief to have someone else take care of the food.

I don't understand why you won't just use your friend for all of it. Doing it yourself is not safe. Honestly, I see this ending in the emergency room.

Just have your friend do it all...she's already doing the hard part, prepping all the fixings. The meat is the easiest part about tacos

I'll just echo what everyone else has said.....please don't do any of it yourself (you or FH). It's too stressful and difficult to be safe and also enjoy your day. Just have a professional do it.

Get your fried to do it. You and your FH will be stressful enough without worrying about cooking!

I to am doing a late night nacho bar and the caterer told me to go to the restaurant store and get the large cans of cheese, jalapenos, taco cheese, olives, chips, and so on and so on and he said HE would take care of the rest. All im to do it 3 days before drop it off at the venue in the fridge and he will do the rest. He told me NOT to do the meat (which i never planned lol). Also check with the venue because mine does not allow it at all!!

Zero far out. In order to be safe, those things need to be cut up immediately before serving.

I recommend looking into a taquero in your area. With a large Mexican population you are sure to find plenty. If you have any friends in the Mexican community ask around for references. Many taqueros might not have a website but spread their business through word of mouth and/or business cards. You definitely want to go with someone that is reputable and that isn't going to give your guests food poisoning. I am hiring a taquero for my wedding and it's 10.75 pp for 4 tacos, rice and beans and the full salsa bar. If you are set on DIYing the meat, make sure you brush up on food safety and you will need people other than yourselves to be prepping and heating etc. no clue how much you would save trying to DIY. For 150 ppl I'm running under 2,000 with a taco caterer.

She had to invite a lot of people to get more donations to her DepositAGift and Honeyfund registries.
