Tacky to have plastic plates?

Allison, on April 12, 2012 at 12:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

So, we've already bought real wine glasses and real silverwear for our hors d'oevres wedding reception, but I'm not sure about buying or renting real plates. They sell nice looking plastic ones with gold rims at smartyhadaparty.com, but I'm worried that our guests will think we're cheap and tacky. Also, my FH thinks the 7 and a half inch salad plates will be large enough, but I'm wondering if we should go for full-sized plates. It is buffet style, so people can go back if they want more food. What do you think?

I dont think plastic plates will be tacky.

That should be the least of their concern lol

I mean, you bought real silverwear and glasses.

If the plates look nice then go for em!!

We are doing plastic plates, cups, and silverware. It's the fancy stuff, the silverware seriously looks like normal until you get up close. The way i figure it is it is free from our caterer to use plastic- it would cost at least $200 to rent the real stuff.

As for size of plates- I think smaller is easier to handle if people will be standing and mingling.

I think I'm doing disposable as well.. it is included with out caterer and would cost us $5/pp for real otherwise. Aside from that, there is no break from the caterer if we decide NOT to use what they provide (ie we pay for it either way)...

P.S: who, as a guest, actually REMEMBERS what they ate off of?! Not me. I can't remember what the dinner wear was for any of the weddings I've been too, even recent ones.

Cool. Thanks for putting my fears to rest! I do like the idea of people walking around and mingling, so I guess little, lighter plates is a good thing :-)

No way, i thought the same thing at first and a caterer had told me, most people don't care what they are eating on as long as they are eating! lol

I used the silver rimmed ones from Smarty. But I also did plastic silverware and cups. I think mixing them is a bad idea.

For the appetizers, the 7 1/2 inch plates should be fine. However, you want to make sure you have double the 7 1/2 in plates- because people will get seconds and you'll need them for serving cake. You definitely want the 10 in plates for the meal.

The plastic plates are perfectly fine. They are real looking and surprisingly most people don't care about the look of the plate, but if it's durable. 7 1/2 inch plates are perfectly fine, but like meghan said, order extra just in case people want seconds.

The plastic ones are fine. I would care more about the food on the plate.

If you had to ask, then you are concerned with it. As mentioned, most don't think it's tacky. If you have a 5 star reception room, and steak and lobster on the menu, then plastic will be tacky. Otherwise, relax and put the food on whatever works.

We love Smartyhadaparty.com! Such a fun company. The plates look real & people are so surpised that they aren't. I would go with the larger ones though, otherwise you, it looks obvious (whether you are or aren't ) that you're saying don't take too much.

I was also worried about this, I started to do the charger plates but when I seen the plastic plates from smartyhadaparty.com I just went with the black plastic plates, plastic wine glasses and the plastic "real looking" silverwear. I put it all together and when everyone walks in, it will "look" real. Until they pick them up. Then they are not going to be worried about it because they will be hungry. LOL

We aren't having any plastic... I bought all of our flatware and plateware off of another bride at a pretty hefty discount, but now I'm washing 150 place settings post wedding (thank goodness there are 4 dishwashers on site!) and need to haul several hundred pounds of dishware to and from Maine. However I won't be throwing out multiple trash bags of plastic, and if people decide to set their appetizer plates down during our outdoor cocktail hour they aren't going to blow away. So there are trade offs.

We don't use plastic at home, we even have metal straws, so I couldn't imagine using it at our wedding. My rule of thumb is I want to have my wedding be at least as nice as how I would entertain guests in my home.I've been to weddings with plastic and they all use plastic at home so its not really a surprise to me.

Yes, plastic plates is tacky for wedding. They probably won't remember the food... but they will remember your wedding by the plastic plates.

I was IN a wedding a few months back and then attended another wedding 3 weeks later with said bride and her quote to me was "well, now I don't feel so bad about having plastic plates at MY wedding" This bride is one of my best friends, I even helped set up the wedding and helped plan it and I didnt even remember the plates were plastic.

As long you get the nice ones youll be fine. The food and your dress are the only things people remember about a wedding.
