There's no such thing as over-discussing avocados.
Kir - Shopping for avocados is like an art. It's so stressful. Like I feel like I need to find one that is somewhat soft already, and one that is hard for later in the week, but it's a shot in the dark.
@WWJo - we have so much guac in our fridge and you just reminded me...I can't wait to snack on it and watch the Bachelorette when I get home from work!
We have been on an avocado kick lately. We buy four at $4.99~ How much do you pay?
ETA: and that would be a 4 pack of avocados. Not $4.99 each. At that price they better be the best fucking avocados on the planet.

Kir, I've learned that to find the perfect avocado, you remove that little "plug" where the stem used to be and you can check the inside that way. Hasn't failed me yet!
MMMM Avocados....I'll jump in for that convo, lol. DH is pretty much an avocado whisperer. He can't pick a bad one, seriously. They are fairly inexpensive for us (TX) and we have them in the kitchen constantly. Doesn't matter what we're eating, we have avo on the side all the time! You know what pairs well with avo that doesn't sound like it would? Buffalo sauce. We make a rotisserie chicken sandwich alot with buffalo sauce and avocado and it's just so good, but I never would have thought...it's DH's concoction. Had one last night in fact
It should give but still be firm when you squeeze, also if you can twist the little stem off of bottom its good to go. If its to hard, put in paper bag with an apple for a few days.
ETA; Sass beat me to it on the stem trick.
ETA: Summer- BBQ is good too!

Nikkell, yup! You can see the inside and tell how ripe it is. Some pinterest life hacks are actually useful lol.
Any tricks for getting them to ripen faster? I never want to keep them around the house because DH hates them (somehow we make it work, but it's tough) but then whenever I want them I have to go buy them and they aren't ripe yet and then I'm sad (and crunching on unripe avocado because you gotta do what you gotta do...).
@Kathryn, oh you absolutely have to take it out while you eat. But I have the attachments on my teeth that are scratching my gums. And every time you eat, you have to brush, floss and put them right back in. I've brushed my teeth 4 times today already..... It definitely takes away from the food experience when you're in pain and then immediately have to introduce mint toothpaste.
@WWJo to make them ripen faster my mum would wrap each one in newspaper and it seemed to work. To avoid them from going bad you can put them in the fridge and they will ripen slow
