Table Size per person?

Annie Adams, on September 23, 2012 at 1:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

Our contract with the venue, includes the contract for the rental company. Thus I have to start thinking of how many tables (and what sizes) we will need to rent. Which has lead me directly into making a seating chart.

YUP! Im working on my seating chart 215 Days before my wedding. Yep, I have seriously lost my mind.

However, on a similar topic, Im trying to figure out how many, or what size, tables we need.

If I was going to put 8 people at a round table, how wide should the table be?

And if I was going to be plus or minus one at a couple tables, should I make those a little bigger/smaller?

Whatever you do! don't smoosh your guests, too many guests at a table really upsets people! i have been to one to many weddings where i am rubbing elbows with my neighbor, reaching for the wrong water glass and stealing silverware! as far as table sizes, over my head! i would check what the rental company recommends for comfortable seating! best of luck. 60 inch tables fit 8 comfortably (though they say 8-10). Depending on how much "stuff" you plan on having at the tables, you could probably squeeze 9 in there, but I think keeping all the tables the same size will look nicest.

So maybe if I get 5.5 foot tables, I can fit 9 comfortably?

We will be serving BBQ, and it'll be buffet style so I definitely want more room than less.

    AHA!

AAA rentals says that 5 foot tables first 8, and 6 foot tables sit 10. So if I can get 5 1/2 foot tables, that's what I will get!

And Michelle - first, thanks for the advice - you're probably right about all the tables being the same size looking best. But honestly, my.... erm.... our wedding is going to be so comfortable I really dont mind having different size tables.

Plus Im worried that if I only have 7 people at a table that *could* fit 9 or 10... people will be too spread out to talk! What do you think?

Annie, you really need to wait and see what size tables your rental company offers.

I know 6' and 8' rectangular are standard. I think 60" (5') rounds are normal.

I have not heard of a 5.5' table (not saying they don't make them).

An 8' rectangular could have 1 at each end (probably bumping their knees on table legs) and 3-4 on each side. But, if you put 4 on a side, only the middle 2 won't be bumping knees on table legs.

Well so far we're sticking with round tables for the guests. (The food will be served off square tables.)

And Im not saying definitely 5.5 tables. Just saying that's what would work nicely for us.

I promise not to try hand-sawing the tables town to the correct size. I will leave the extra 6 inches on there if they only have 6 foot tables. LOL

I think having 7 at a 5 ft table wouldn't be too spread out. They really aren't that big - people will still be able to talk. I also have never heard of a 5.5ft table. I like the size of the 5 ft table for talking. I find 10 people at a table is a bit much for me in terms of making conversations. It seems like there are way too many conversations going on at once.

While I agree with Andrea to not squeeze too many people at tables just to save on rentals and whatnot, one piece of advice that our caterers gave us and I completely agree with is that people will rather be a little squished and be seated next to people that they know then to have more elbow room and be at a table full of strangers.

We had all 60 inch round tables at our wedding and the number of people at our tables varied depending on groups of people and families. Different sized tables will definitely stand out more than just different amounts of people at tables.

Also know that if you start your seating chart now, it will constantly be changing now until your wedding when you receive your RSVPs and even last minute cancellations or add ons after you get your RSVPS.

MrsO, I dont mind constantly changing things.

Im one of those people who has a hard time starting a big project. Somehow I just cant get started with something I know is overwhelming or time consuming.

So I find that when I get the chance to do the bulk of a project, then make adjustments later on, I get projects done on time and with less mental fatigue.

I have to do the same thing when I write a schedule different locations I work at; I write out what I want the schedule to be IDEALLY, then make changes as people request off or other projects arise.

    Is it really that weird?

I got a degree in interior design, and a good rule of thumb is to allow at minimum 2.5' of space for each person, preferably 3'. So if you had a 42x72" table, you could fit two on each side, and one at each end. This really applies for square or rectangular tables. Round tables have a different calculation.

    60" round holds 8 comfortably

    72" round holds 10 comfortably

I am so excited! You all thought I was crazy but it was true!!!

Select Event rentals actually have 5 1/2 foot tables!! LOL.

So I will get mostly 5 foot tables for the guests, them 5.5 foot tables for the sibling & wedding party tables.

Everyone else should fit around a 5 foot table just fine.

THANKS EVERYONE WHO HELPED ME OUT ON THAT ONE!
