Supermarket Wedding Cake

Future Mrs. Coombs, on August 24, 2013 at 6:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Has anyone ever done this? We've been thinking about doing this since we are having such a small affair and cutting costs is a great thing for us. Debating if cake is a good place to cut a corner at.

I got my wedding cake from Walmart when we had our first wedding. It was three tier, fed 150 people, with sugar crystals and buttercream icing and we gave them swatches of our colors and they matched it precisely (fuchsia and orange). The cake was delicious and EVERYONE loved it. Total cost was 368.00.

@ Kris C. Publix cakes ARE really good the only problem I had was a standard three tier white cake with no decoration starts off at 500.00. I was like huh??!! Really!!?? Lol, but they do taste amazing

I've been thinking of Walmart as well but when I went last week supposedly they no longer do wedding cakes anymore :'( at least not in my area(AZ). May just go with Sam's Club or Costco. Costco cakes are amazing!

We are going with a bakery for our cake cutting cake, like a 6in and 8 in stacked. And four our 200-250 guests we are doing costco sheet cakes, $17 for 48 servings. Most people will only take a few bites, and I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg for cake. (I used to be a pastry chef, but I don't feel I can take on the project myself)

I was thinking of using Publix for our cake also but didn't know they start @ $500. I guess I'll need to look for other options.

Wow. I was thinking about doing this too but these are way more expensive than I thought. Not much less than the baker I was looking at

Get a smaller cake with fewer tiers to cut with hubby at the reception and have your venue serve your guest from a sheet cake in the back.

Consider someone fresh out of school who wants to establish their rep. It's scary, but I know some who are genius lol and it won't be their first time baking and decorating a multi- tier cake.

If cake is not that important consider pie or some other desert. A lot of southern brides are cutting into huge pies Smiley smile

FH did get a cake from Kroger for my senior recital and people still can't stop talking about how delicious it was.

    Hope these suggestions are helpful

I have heard good things about publix but we don't have one around us... And the price sounds similar to the bakery here.

Good ideas Chrissy Smiley smile We are having a very small intimate wedding so I figure a small circle cake would be fine for all of us Smiley smile

I'll have to look into someone who just came out of school OR do a pie Smiley smile

Thanks everyone for the suggestions Smiley smile I never heard about Publix cakes.

I went to two weddings where the cakes were purchased from Walmart and they were delicious! I was thinking of getting mine there, I hope they still carry them in my area.

    I did Wal-Mart cakes.

The two tiered plain white special occasions cake plus a whole sheetcake was only 98$ and we had 140 people and half left over.

If it tastes awesome, go for it. Cakes are useless if they don't taste good.

I think this is a great idea-- a fancy cake does not make you any more married, but can cost an arm and a leg!

I was going to post what Chrissy did. I've heard about people getting a small personal cake and then having sheet cake in the back for everyone else. They take your cake in back anyway to cut it up. Nobody needs to know where your cake is from.

We are doing ours at Publix. We will get a small two tier cake for us to display and cut, and we will have cupcakes to serve (to avoid the $1 per slice cake cutting fee). They do different flavors, colors, fillings, and they are WAY less expensive than any bakery. They also do cake tastings. I'm doing my flowers with them as well and only have to pay one delivery fee for both flowers and cake.
