Subway catering for reception?

Anonymous, on February 29, 2012 at 12:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

We are on a budget and we're having the wedding at my parents house. We simply cannot afford $20 a plate for food. We have pretty laid back family/friends so we were thinking on having a buffet type set up where people can make their own sandwiches and also have fruit, etc available. I would like to concentrate more on entertainment than a fancy sit down meal but is Subway too tacky?

I don't know about anyone else but I would much rather have liked food like this at other weddings than some so called "nice" catered meals that tasted like plastic and sat under heat lamps for the whole day.

Opinions?

I agree. I think this is a wonderful idea--just make sure you have enough options for everyone...do you have any vegetarian friends? Because you might want to make sure there is enough to construct veggie subs if that's the case.

    I say run with it!

If that's what you want, go for it! I am not a fan of plated meals personally. The food is NEVER hot and mediocre. At least with a buffet, it stays hot, always replenished and fresh, and people get what they want and how much they want.

I think if that is what you want, than go for it. I would plan it around a lunch time though.

Do you know anyone that could possibly cook and do some catering for you that way, so it's a bit more personal and not just subway? If not, I think your idea is fine if you think your guest will be pleased with it. However, are you also cutting back on your actual wedding decor ect? Meaning if your spending all the budget on everything else and skimping on the food that's a big no no but if not then your on the right track.

I agree with Carole, you should plan it around lunch time.

I agree with the lunch suggestions. Also, make sure you spruce up the presentation. Nice buffet tables and plates can make any dish look fancier.

I don't think Subway is tacky, but I do think it's gross. I get sick every time I eat there.

Do you have a local deli that might be able to cater within your budget? What about deli trays from your local grocery store? Do you have a Panera Bread near you (their stuff is soooo good). I think anything that can be done buffet style is a terrific idea and I also agree with Carole that you should have it around lunch time.

I love panera! But they can be pricy too. Have some family members make pasta salads, potato salads, all picnic foods, fruits, desserts, etc.... maybe even do a picnic theme. It could be really cute with the red and white etc. You could buy the meat from a local deli with cheeses and then the bread from panera, or rolls etc.

I think the deli idea would be better. Those subs can get soggy sitting there. Better to have the buns and bread seperate.

However, if you are doing this so you can have a $2000 dress, a $5000 photographer, and $4000 flowers, this would be a very inappropriate way to treat your guests. You can be cheap all around, but if you are only cheap when it comes to food and beverages, then don't bother having a reception.

Something we are doing is to use our local grocery chain Publix. The cost per person is looking about $7-$8 currently

I agree with Pumpkin about using a deli - Subway is low quality food and I doubt if it's premade it will hold up any better than the food you are complaining about.

I'll agree with the other ladies: do it in the afternoon, make sure that it looks pretty, and maybe go with a deli rather than subway. honestly, who doesn't like a sandwich?
