Struggling to figure out what this wedding should look like! How did you decide?

S, on September 8, 2020 at 9:46 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

Hi all,

After helping out all my relatives and friends get married (so many weddings!), it's time for me to plan one and... *drumroll* I don't know what it should look like.

**I also want to note that I used to always think I would get married at the courthouse, but relatives & FH want a small wedding (about 50-60 people)**

I finally picked out a dress (phew!):

Struggling to figure out what this wedding should look like! How did you decide? 1

And a venue: (!)

Struggling to figure out what this wedding should look like! How did you decide? 2

But I don't know what to do from here. I feel like the event should be very fun (with MarioKart projected on the wall during the reception) but also formal enough that it feels like I got married(??). My FH and I love eclectic & vintage things (yes to Wes Anderson style!) but we're also very nerdy and bookish gamers. Both of us though, love to dress up when the situation calls for it. We both love fashion & art. Smiley xd

I'm inclined to make the reception the "fun & casual" side of us while making the ceremony a little more treasured and grown-up.

However, I'm still struggling with merging the two together. On one hand, I could just go eclectic, vintage (40s or 60s) and colorful but casual. On the other, I'd be vintage, classic and semi-formal. Like a color palette- I love lots of different palettes and FH doesn't care what I choose. But how do I merge an idea of colorful, eclectic bridesmaids with semi-formal? Or how do I make casual vintage? How do I make this even feel like an extension of us but also fun for everyone else?! Lol. Too many questions!

This experience has caused a slight existential crisis in that, I've found our taste buds to be duplicitous... and I haven't cooked harmoniously in some time! Smiley xd

But seriously, how did you guys figure it out for your weddings? And, can I see pictures (RL or pinterest inspo)? <.<

Lol, thank you!

I strongly suggest you make a Pinterest board and just look up different types of wedding Styles. I think you will see something that will inspire you but I will say I have seen wedding weddings where for the reception they focused more on making it a relaxing and game type atmosphere. You should really look that up. Honestly I think the type of wedding you have will depend on your both of your personalities and also what type of bride you are. I couldn't exactly nail what kind of bride I was until I exchange my first dress for the second one and my friend said that the dress and I'm wearing and for the venue that we have is classic and elegant and then that made me realize that's the kind of bride I want to be. I would stop and think what kind of bride you are what kind of broom he is and just take those elements and combine them.

Thank you, you're right that I need to realize what kind of bride I am. Still figuring that out. But that's probably the real reason I can't figure out what this wedding should look like.

I do have a long pinterest board but does it make sense that I like all the various ideas but at the same time, none of them are ringing true?

Take a look at Instagram for ideas too. Offbeatbride.com has alot of vintage themes. Pick out what you like best and go from there. There's no right or wrong.

So why not combine the elements you like? A little bit from each one?

Thank you, I haven't looked at OffBeatBride.com! Been checking out rocknrollbride.com but I didn't know of another unusual wedding website. Thank you!

I can post pics from my wedding if you want. It was in a historic library and I added forest greenery so the two together ended up complimenting well with an enchanted forest fairy-tale (books) without coming off too theme-y.

I LOVE your dress and venue. It totally lends a vintage vibe for me. Your dress is very Dior "new look" from the 1930s vibe or the 1950s with the tea length.
Now speaking as a HUGE Nintendo/Sega fan, I think maybe I would include it on something like a groom's cake or maybe the guest book. I don't know that I would try to make a theme, you know? Picking colors and a vibe you like is a great way to go about it. But I'd take a cue for your amazing dress. That can easily and beautifully inform the look of your wedding.

That's a great question! Not sure if the answer lies in the fact that the pinterest board has a little of everything (boho, black n white, vintage, bridemaids wearing suits, bridesmaids wearing lace & tulle separates, mismatched bridal party, color, antique books, tattoos drawn on table runners, etc- you see how varied my tastes are [& FH's]).

Or if the answer is, deep down, the wedding I would love is a destination micro wedding in NYC at the Brooklyn Bridge w/no bridal party and we all go to a great pizza place afterwards. FH & I can look amazing but the guests can wear whatever is comfortable for them.

But FH likes a bridal party & one of my grandmothers wants to be at the wedding but she can't do long distant trips anymore. Plus both my sisters have expressed that they want to be bridesmaids.

So, long answer short, if you want to skip the above post: I don't know. Smiley xd

But, thank you Kristen. Smiley laugh Your replies are really encouraging me to not give up! *Tbh, I was feeling that way...

Aw, thanks Julie! Wow, yes please! The history library sounds perfect for a wedding. Smiley heart

Agreed, I don't know if I could do a "theme" for this event but rather an "influenced-by". Wow, I think I just got an idea as I was typing this post. Thank you!! *And yes, I'd still love to see your pictures!

When I think Wes Andersen I think of fun prints and patterns, moody jewel tones, deer/forest life - I think that’d be a really cool way to go!

WOW! How did you guys find that venue??! It's absolutely beautiful!! And, you're right, I see how the influence of forestry adds to the setting, not becoming a separate theme. (I love the moss & candles!!!) Really well done!

It's based off GBH and I love that movie. Finding the color palette was a serious struggle too!!! This fits perfectly.
Thank you!! I'm getting excited again!!!

My FH and I are very different people, but what we've done is tried to take the important things about us; our likes/dislikes, passions, spiritual elements etc and tried to honor each of those somehow in the wedding. This was done through song choice, decorations, the venue itself, clothing etc. Our wedding is ridiculously eclectic but flows so well because it is a true representation of who we are individually and as a couple.
