Stanley Cup VS Wedding

Kelsey, on May 29, 2015 at 9:37 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 56

FH is a HUGE New York Rangers fan and has been his entire life. We've gone to NY a couple times to see them play. It costs us around $700-$1000 to go down for a weekend, because we drive down from Canada, plus NYC hotel prices etc.

Anyway, he's declared a few times now that if they win the Stanley Cup, we're going to NY to see the celebration parade. Any other time I would be pumped, but it would be about a month before our wedding, and for anyone who noticed before, FH was unemployed for 4 months, after being laid off, and we spent a good chunk of wedding savings to get by. He's back to work now, but we're playing catch up and it'll be a tight squeeze to meet our budget (of $10000). To use $1000 of it to drive 26 hours total, stay in a NYC hotel, to watch a 20 minute parade, seems insane, and it hurts my feelings.

Am I being selfish by trying to put my foot down against this? Or is he by putting his childhood fantasy ahead of our wedding? I feel stuck.

Ahhh. This is hard because sports are serious lol

Can you somehow lessen the cost by shortening the trip, staying an hour or two outside the city, packing food, etc?

We've stayed in NJ before and we had some scary happenings lol... maybe Brooklyn would be better?

The Canadian dollar is pretty low now, it drops every week, so gas on it's own would be over $400, and a hotel for one night would be $200 minimum (with conversion it'd be closer to $350-$400), so I wasn't even really considering food lol.. McDonalds for the win Smiley amazing

@Kelsey, tell him good luck getting to the parade. As a New Yorker, I don't bother trying for any of the parades. Normally you have to get there way too early o'clock, (around 3am or earlier) and can't leave your spot once you get there. Its easier for him to see it on CNN.

I thought you were going to say your wedding was on the sane day as the cup, in which I would have wished you luck. My Parents got married on the final game of The World Series and she said the men in the family all were listening to their transistor radios and the band kept announcing the score. lol

Has he ever been to a parade? Parades are pretty terrible.

The Hawks are going to win anyway so he will be wasting his time.

LoL hey, NJ is great! Mostly...

I would try like Westchester county in New York and take the Metro-North line into the city. You have to watch which town you pick still because those can also be pricey. Or even Connecticut is an option! Trying to shorten your driving/gas usage.

Especially in NYC. Watch it from the comfort from your home and enjoy the luxuries of a lavatory, a seat, and food.

ETA, Long Island isn't a bad place to crash either. We have a train that heads into the city.

That is a pretty big ASSumption they will win the cup. I am a BLues fan, we have no cups. I get it, but unless he gets a PT job to pay for this trip, I would go NOPE.

Hahaha @StarFromIHJ that sounds horrible! And I totally agree about the parade, same as NYE, it's useless unless we want to live on the sidewalk for 24 hours (might help hotel costs lol jk).

He hasn't been to the parade no, and I told him it'd be better on TV, but he wants to "experience it and be there with them" even if he barely sees anything Smiley amazing

He is a truly reasonable person, and this is the only thing we ever argue about, but he is a die hard fan. I don't want him to think I don't "get it", but he doesn't "get" how ridiculous it would be for what kind of trip we'd have :\

@Kelsey, if I ever got a ticket for the Macy's Parade in the cushy assigned seats I'd go. If not, I watch all the parades on TV.

Lol I'm not assuming they'll win the cup, still 4 teams as of now! If they do have to play anyone next round I would hope for the Ducks... but then I might have to deal with my anxiety parade! lol

I'm just preparing myself for a response because he talks about it daily now and it will arise in the next couple weeks, if not tonight.

*Because I love him and he's very superstitious I do have to go on record that I love the Rangers and hope they win Smiley amazing lol

I'm sure he wouldn't sacrifice his wedding for this, so if he is planning on doing this I'm sure he'll mindful to not hinder the wedding budget.

I'd be at that parade and cut something from the wedding!! I am a huge Flyer's fan though so I hope they lose. Smiley smile

ETA: Like @Star said though, they win a lot. The Flyers do not.

@StarFromIHJ I agree, I'd rather even have a mini party and watch from home. It makes more sense and would be more fun. I just don't know how to convince FH of that if the time comes.

I'm with PK on this one.

I'm from Detroit, so if anyone knows anything about our city, we're apeshit for hockey and our Red Wings. So I get it.

But every parade I've been to and I'm sure even a big ass NYC parade are going to be very underwhelming and definitely not worth $1,000.

Ok. I love hockey/ sports so heres my opinion:

    1. Theres a 75% chance this may not happen. So you might be freaking out over nothing. They have to win tonight and then beat the Ducks/ Hawks which in my opinion will not be happening.

    2. I have been to a lot of parades in Boston, they are fun for 5 minutes. I lived at most an hour away, anything more than that I wouldn't waste my time.

    3. I went to the Bruins one because it was the first time and it was a let down. I'm a Bruins die hard and its not what its hyped up to be. But I totally get where he is coming from. Tell him it sounds better than it really is.

    4. It cost a lot more money to hang out, get food and drink all day too, which is what you will probably end up doing.

All in all, its fun but definitely not worth $1000. We probably spent $300 all in and I thought that was too much.

I dunno if this is a serious question based on the answers.

Honestly it's ridiculous to spend 1k to go see a sports parade when you have "more important" things to worry about. People are entitled to have flights of fancy like that when they have the money. You appear not to have it. So.....to me this is ridiculous lol.

Sorry, if you are barley able to meet your obligations for the wedding, and he was unemployed for months until recently, it is really quite irresponsible and immature of him to "declare" that's he's going to a 20-minute parade that will cost $1k. He can watch it on CNN.
