Sponsor/Guests who wear ivory

FinallyMrsMoon, on October 22, 2013 at 6:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

FH has an aunt that he is extremely close to. So close that we made her & her husband one of our primary sponsors.

We are having the big traditional Catholic wedding and today she asked FH what my dress color was. He responds with "white". She continues to ask if she can wear ivory as this dress she likes only comes in ivory or black.

My response?

"Is she gonna wear a veil too?"

I don't even know. Am I being too harsh thinking I should be the only one in the white/ivory color that day?

I've seen a lot more wedding photos these days where bridesmaids wear shades of white/ivory but I'm on the same page as you. I don't think you're being harsh. I wouldn't be too thrilled if anyone in my wedding party or family wore white or ivory.

To me there are only 3 acceptable times to wear white/ivory to a wedding 1. Your the bride 2. Your the flower girl 3. It's your undergarments and no one will see them anyways!!

She needs to choose another dress!!

Honestly, I couldn't care less if a guest, sponsor, etc... wanted to wear ivory (or white- my dress is that awesome). In her mind, ivory may not even be a proper wedding dress color since it's not virginal white, lol.

If your dress is informal, I could understand where you're coming from. Otherwise, I really don't think anyone is going to look at her and think that she's trying to wear a wedding gown, too.

Food for thought: She probably wants to wear ivory instead of black, because black is a mourning color. Many traditional Catholics don't view ivory as an appropriate bridal color. I think that the aunt is trying to be considerate.

I've been to several weddings where the mother of the bride wears a white/cream/light beige color. I personally don't have an issue with a mother figure wearing those colors... Unless it's a strapless number with a slit up to there. .. or a train lol

Thanks ladies. I've been so laid back with everything else that I just didn't know how to react. Its one of those gut feelings that you hope is wrong.

I have seen a few aunties who rock the cream color in previous wedding and I think that's okay depending on the dress.

HOWEVER, I've attached what she sent. This dress in ivory looks a little too bridal to me.

Edit - sorry forgot to add the dress. :p

That would honestly enrage me if anyone showed up to my wedding in white or ivory. I would seriously put your foot down on this one. That dress could totally be bridal! If she HAS to have that dress, she can wear it in black. Final story. It is 100% okay for you to be firm on this one.

Yeah, that's a dress that I could see people gossiping about and rolling their eyes about her wearing it. That's definitely a bridal like dress in white. I would say something.

No way would I be ok with someone wearing ivory/white to my wedding ESPECIALLY that dress. That could totally be bridal! Although if she wore it people would just look at her and think she was being ridiculous (which is true), but there's no reason she can't find something else to wear so as to not upstage you.

Tell her no for her own sake. Let's say you are OK with her wearing ivory at the wedding.... just pretend... Other guests will look at her and gossip about why she is trying to upstage the bride.

I wrote a "review" on a wedding I attended on Saturday. There was a girl who wore all white. EVERYONE just looked her up and down and rolled their eyes. One brazen grandma actually said, "You're not the bride."

I agree, I wouldn't want her to wear that dress. I think it would be very pretty in black!

She knows that you may not be okay with her wearing ivory...that's why she asked! Just be honest and speak up.

Yeah... I think that's a bit too much. Would she go for a shorter length (below the knee or at mid calf) with a little shawl or jacket?

That my darling is a wedding dress!!! Do not let her wear it. IMO she's a straight up B for even thinking that this would be okay. She asked... because she knows it's not okay.

While I wouldn't/didn't care if anyone wore white, the style lends it self to being quite "bridal" and there for I think you have a case for expressing your "dislike"

That looks straight up like a wedding dress. That's extremely inappropriate!

That IS a wedding gown. WTH. I don't really care about the whole color thing until you want to wear something that IS a wedding gown. I mean if she would have found an ivory knee length dress that was clearly more casual that's one thing, but this is quite another.
