Splurge or Save: Music?

Lynnie, on January 23, 2018 at 3:13 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 37

This week we’re talking all about budgeting! Divvying up your wedding budget can be tough, so you’ll want to think through your priorities to decide where you want to splurge and where you need to save.

Are you making your own playlist or going all in with a 10 piece band? Are you splurging or saving on reception music?

We went with a DJ, more affordable, and also meant fewer vendor meals.

Went with a DJ. Still pretty expensive, but a lot less than a band would have been. Everyone said they were amazing, so you do need to hire someone very good.

Save. We will be using an Ipod with speakers but, our wedding is small (25 guests) and we are not having dancing. We are fostering a dinner party atmosphere so we didn't feel it was necessary to spend money on a DJ.

We splurged. DH and I love big band music, especially 30s/40s swing music as well as motown and funk. This is one of the few items my DH felt comfortable going all out for with our budget. We were lucky and found a company that has several different bands/group sizes so we could actually hire 2 bands and still work with the same company. We hired a solo guitarist for cocktail hour, a smaller 5 piece band for dinner that played Rat Pack tunes, and then a 9 piece band for the dancing that played swing, motown, funk and a few modern beats.

Plan on going with a DJ, is that considered splurging, (cause they can be pretty expensive) however we found a pretty great DJ who has some amazing packages with extras included for a good price.

We are splurging a bit on music. We'll have a DJ for the reception, but have hired a cello/flute duo for the ceremony and cocktail hour. It was one of the first things that we decided on.

We are choosing a Do for everything but I have a secret surprise for everyone. My bff son plays violin. He is learning to play the ed Sheehan song perfect for me to walk down too. 😍

We were prepared to spend a bit on the DJ. Its almost as important as the photographer. Luckily we found a DJ with great reviews for $950!

This one was easy- save. We are not having a dance so we're just doing a Spotify playlist using the reception's sound system. Total cost $0 since we got a free Spotify premium subscription.

In the middle- DJ. I would have loved a band, honestly, but there aren't many options where we got married and it's such a huge price jump from the DJ we used.

We did have a live musician for the ceremony and definitely do not regret spending that extra money.

Our DJ was included with our venue package, however I've heard great things about their music (the venue is very popular in our area).

Saved for the reception with a DJ and will be splurging for a string trio for the ceremony!

DJ! I like the DJ party vibe and we want a huge variety of music from salsa to country to disco.... so DJ it is. Found one for 1,000 including up lighting throughout ballroom, monogram light, pre-ceremony and ceremony. I have no clue if that’s splurging to most but it was to me bc our budget is small too!!

Having a band for music and entertainment is my top splurge! We want to dance and enjoy ourselves with our loved ones.

I guess we would be splurging since we're hiring a DJ. The company is awesome and they give you a DJ (who acts as the emcee) and a second person who will actually play the music.

We did splurge a little here. We're getting married back in New Orleans so we have hired two bands - a brass band to lead a second line parade after the ceremony and play a bit for our guests, and another jazz band to play music for the ceremony and reception.

We did a more affordable DJ and he was a little cheesy but he had good energy! Everyone thought he was funny so it was worth it.
