Spin-off: Is there any way to prevent the clinking glasses?

Amanda, on March 11, 2013 at 8:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

Add clinking glasses to get the B&G to kiss to the list of wedding traditions that I do not care for. Has anyone discovered a successful way to get around it? Just not responding when guests start clinking glasses, having the DJ make an announcement (although that could just make it worse), anything?

Red Solo Cups?! HAHA JK I would say probably just don't do it, pass the word around on the down low maybe through the bridal party and let it get out that way. I wouldn't make an announcement that might make it awkward IDK

    Plastic.

There is plastic that looks like glass.

Other than that I think you just have to suck it up or look like poor sports. People at my first wedding did it a few times early on, but they gave it up. It got old for them too, I think.

I was actually shocked that people did not do this as much as I thought they would at our reception. They only did it to us once when we were saying hi on our family side of the reception. We obliged, but then we were on the dance floor and in the photo booth for the rest of the night.

I would suggest boogieing the night away & giving your guests something else to do. Maybe an I Spy card?

My fiance says that if/when people do this he is just going to completely ignore it (and probably scowl) until they stop....he's totally serious too, he can be a pretty stubborn guy lol. I'm just afraid its going to convince his friends to clink louder all night, sigh.

Provide an alternative. We are doing karaoke during cocktail hour - if you want us to kiss, you have to sing us a love song. lol.

I went to another wedding where married couples could come up and kiss in front of the bride and groom and then they would kiss, and one where they have you some random words and you had to write a poem using the words and read it and then they would kiss. It was kind of funny.

Plastic - genius! I think our venue provides glassware, but maybe I'll put in a special request for plastic haha. It's a big, obnoxious thing in my circle. The insufferable clinking went on for the entire reception at the last wedding we attended. The bride was visibly annoyed, but it kept going anyway. My mom and FMIL are already teasing me about how much clinking they're going to do, so I need to nip this in the bud.

OMG I hope somebody has a good way to do it.

My MIL started with the clinking. We just gave her one very long, not-so-friendly look. Nobody did it afterwards :-)

I'm with Lizz M. I didn't try to prevent it for my wedding but got annoyed thinking about it. I was completely shocked because most people did it in the beginning and then after that it was like they all forgot because they were having fun dancing or chatting with other guests.

If you are worried about it but don't mind doing the kissing part then I've seen brides at other weddings provide a kissing bell at each table.

@Lizz, I'm glad it didn't go on too long for your wedding! I'm hoping that between having an upbeat DJ and staying out on the dance floor all night, we can tamper down the clinking Smiley smile

We didn't have any clinking at our wedding. However I think that was due to the layout. Our reception tables were wrapped along the outside of our venue on their side portico and the front terrace. While all the tables had a view of ours, it wasn't the same as being in a room together. Then after the meal was served and people were finished eating, people spread out even further. Some people were inside in the room with the DJ, some people stayed at their tables talking, some people hung out on the lawn or by the other side portico where the bar was set up. We mingled all throughout talking to different guests. Not being stuck in 1 room with everyone kinda killed the clinking tradition on it's own.

Oh yeah, that probably had something to do with ours too MrsO! We had the dance floor split the room, & it was under a tent. That probably helped too.

It's funny, I hadn't ever heard of this until very recently. I guess it just isn't a thing around here, or at least in my family? I think providing an alternative and much more entertaining way to make you two kiss is great, and the karaoke idea is AMAZING. I don't know many people who would be willing to sing a song just to see us kiss! Haha!

I really haven't seen this done at weddings recently. I don't think it's something to spend time worrying about. I don't get the issue with it anyway. So what if you have to kiss your new husband a couple times during the night? haha

There's an EASY way to do this. You just need to have a good MC to convey the message.

When someone starts clinking their glasses, have your DJ direct the attention to you and ask you to select a table (you choose the table that started the clinking). Then you say that THEY have to kiss (almost inevitably, there's two dudes sitting together at the table where this started).

    Problem solved!

@RayRay, I think it's another one of those cultural things. It happened at every wedding I attended last year! And at one of the receptions, it was DOZENS of times. Once or twice is totally fine, but people (especially small children who thought it was funny) got obnoxious with it! Hopefully no glass clinking will be an added bonus of having an adults-only reception. We'll see...

It just becomes annoying. I sure wanted to kiss my new husband, but I want to do it on my own schedule haha!

    @MCDJCarlos, that's awesome :-)

Maybe just have the DJ announce that if you break a glass clinking, you buy it! And the whole reception too Smiley winking haha

Our emcee said instead of clnking glasses if you want the bride and groom to kiss you must get up as a table and sing a song about love.

Probably 5 tables participated, and it was much more entertaining than glass clinking. I also hate the glass clinking.

We are mentioning it in the programs and doing an alternative kissing thing.

Unfortunately, if there is no glass, they pound on the table (I too, am guilty)

I don't think there is any 'getting around it"!
