Special needs brother in law

Jessie, on September 7, 2019 at 10:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

My soon to be brother in law is non-verbal autistic and we are figuring out how to incorporate him into the wedding. He is going to be an honorary groomsman and is walking down the aisle with my fiance's cousin (who is a bridesmaid) whom he is comfortable with. We are not sure if he can handle standing up there for an extended period of time or at all. I know every experience is different when it comes to special needs, but what are some of yours'?

Maybe what you could have him do is walk down with the cousin but then her take him to sit in the front row after shaking the grooms hand.
i hope this is kind of helpful. 😊

Maybe that is a good option!

I work with children with autism and what I know is that most of time they hate being in a crowded place, or loud places. You know him better but I would really think about this.

You are right when it comes to a person with autism. Take into account how long the ceremony will be because that will tell you if he is able to handle his position of a groomsman. Also I do agreed with Karen that depending on the level of maturity noise and crowded places can determine whether it will effect him or not. you and your fh knows him best as how to handle the situation. Go on what you know about him and what he can handle. That will determine whether he can handle it or not. Abby has a good idea.

Please dont' call him an "honorary groomsman" - it's very condescending. He's a groomsman regardless of whether he stands up the whole time (or at all) during the ceremony. Make sure he knows where he can sit if he needs to.
