sos wedding dress nightmare (need advice)

Jessica, on July 21, 2019 at 12:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 16

Ladies I could really use some advice. My wedding dress situation has been unbelievably chaotic 🤦🏼‍♀️ so long story (kinda) short. I ordered my dress 5 months ago, the bridal store was acting pretty suspicious about when the dress would arrive and at one point they told me late August. (Our wedding is August 30) So I ended up going to another bridal store who sold the same designer to see if they could help me get some info on my dress. In the meantime they suggested I look for a backup gown Incase it didn’t arrive. I found one, some girl had the same measurements as me ordered it and decided she didn’t want it. My first gown finally showed up but had rips and snags all through It, It also did not fit right at all. The owner kept trying to convince me it was "normal" to have tears in the dress and refused to do anything, until I called the designer and complained. That's when bridal store #1 (painfully) offered cutting the sample size gown (size 10) to a size 4. I know it can be done but I'm really afraid by doing that will ruin the dress since the dress has a lot of detail to it. Has anyone else had a detailed dress altered before, What was your experience like? Also the seamstress from the first store is claiming she can do those alterations in a day which doesn't seem possible. I've just had so much frustration with Bridal store #1 I don't know if I can trust them. Bridal store #2 has been wonderful and has really helped me out through this whole ordeal, They are holding the other gown for me until Tuesday. Ladies please give me some advice. Here are the pictures of the gowns. Gown #1 is the lace/beaded detail. Gown #2 is the one with the illusion bodice.

Go with Bridal Store #2. A dress being altered down that many sizes is not going to look how you want it to, and the first store essentially did you dirty already once, I would not give them the chance to do it to you again.

I love #1! But #2 looks great on you also. Going from a 10 to a 4 would terrify me also! If you can’t trust them then maybe it won’t be worth the stress and money. Did bridal place #2 have the same dress?

I love my first gown which is why I think it's so hard for me to decide if it's worth the risk or not. Unforunetly store #2 did not have the same gown

How are the reviews for #1? I always follow reviews. If they have excellent reviews then maybe take the risk of not then don’t! Or maybe contact a bride who reviewed and get her insight. I always say when in doubt, throw it out! Ha ha

I absolutely would not trust shop #1 to alter a 10 to a 4 in one day. IF it could be done at all, I would think it would take much longer than that. Also, it won’t look like the sample did on you. There’s just no way.
I would go with dress #2. It’s the safer choice.

Honestly taking a lace dress down that many sizes may not be possible. If it is alterations will most likely be near 1000. They will basically be sewing a whole new dress. I would go with dress 2.

I think you look much happier in grown #2. I would go with the bridal store that’s been more helpful, as after hearing your story, I have little faith in store #1.

Both look lovely on you. If it was me i'd go with the second bridal shop because of their help, and they seem more professional. Lace detail doesn't always look the same when cut down, i'd be nervous. You have to love what you wear though

Because I loved planning my wedding, I now work in a bridal store on weekends.

    1) No, new dresses do not arrive with snags (maybe 1-2 but very rare). It sounds like they got another sample. Do not accept that condition!

    2) Do not alter from 10 to 4. The max most dresses can be altered down is a TWO sizes. Otherwise, you’ll pay a fortune in alterations OR the dress style might be ruined anyway.

True, designers can only give shops a 3-4 week delivery window ESTIMATE but I don’t trust store #1. Can you find that same dress on PreOwnedWeddingDresses or StillWhite? It may be too new though.

Girl, my heart goes out to you. Based on everything you've said I would go to Store # 2. I worked in bridal and alterations for years and I can say without a SINGLE DOUBT that 1) The dress you special ordered SHOULD NOT have been received with tears, that is unacceptable. 2) It IS possible going from a Size 10 to a 4 and keeping the detail (I've seen this done before, seamstress has to be AMAZING, and based off what you said I would have little faith in them) but to say if can be done in 1 day? I don't think so. Dresses that have to be taken in typically can take 4+ weeks, on rushes even then it's still atleast 3-7 days.

I would stick to Store # 2 who are willing to help you and not going to make this even more stressful for you. After everything is said and done I would think about taking Store # 1 to small claims court or filing a chargeback for a refund. My heart goes out to you, but no matter what you decide you will be one breathtaking bride. Smiley heart

Both stores have shown you who they are. #1 has shown themselves to not be reliable or professional where it sounds like #2 has been nothing but professional and accommodating. Why would you risk going with #1? They don't deserve your hard earned money or trust.

I would go with the dress that requires the least alterations because both are very detailed and cutting down from a 10 to a 2 is scary... also consider which store is making this easier for you.. I never heard a seamstress making major alterations of that size in a day... they lying to you. Stay away from the liars.. if you paid them money, seek out a refund via your payment method for hoids n services not as advertised. Gl n congrats! The 2nd dress compliments you way more and looks lighter (heat =hot n sweat)
