Something old, something new, Something borrowed, something blue, And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

♥ Elizabeth Nicole ♥, on June 27, 2010 at 2:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

If you are anything like me and are having a hard time imagining whether or not you are even going to have anything borrowed, blue, new (well, I'll definitely have a few things that are new--shoes, dress, etc). But, I don't know what I'm going to borrow or if I'm even going to have anything blue. I don't think that my mom has anything to pass down and I'm not sure if anyone is planning on letting me borrow anything (a friend said I could use her veil, but I don't plan on using a veil at all).

Well, I think my dilemma has just been solved. I found this!! : http://www.etsy.com/listing/50117909/rosebud-lips-old-new-borrowed-blue

I absolutely adore it!!

Hahaha, heavn that is sooo perfect!

I don't know what i'm doing either. I know my mom's oldest sister is getting my garter thus something new (along with my dress). as for the other items... who knows. My aunt was saying I could borrow her bra for the something borrowed, it was a joke since she's way bigger than me, lol.

That's a cute idea. I'm having my dress that is new and my moms blue topaz birthstone ring that my gpop bought her for her sweet 16. It's a trifecta-old, borrowed and blue.

My July 4th bride gave me the lace from her mom's wedding dress to wrap around the handle of her bouquet!

Cute idea! My old/borrowed (I don't care if they overlap haha) is the set of pearls of my gmas that my gpa is letting me wear. My new is my dress of course and I have blue in my bouqet...otherwise my garter :-)

My old/borrowed is going to be a cameo brooch pinned to my bouquet that my grandmother gave to my mom. My sister used the same brooch for her bouquet last year. Something blue - shoes Smiley smile

My blue is my shoes (I'll be wearing navy blue suede flats, since they work well for the season and I can re-use!), borrowed/old is my mother's diamond stud earrings, and my new is the dress. Blue shoes work great if you have a long dress since no one will see them.

Inflation must have hit! ;o) when I got married it was a ha' penny ,,, and I still have the one my friend brought from England just for that purpose. My borrowed was my mother's lace handkerchief.

In my family, there is a tradition of pinning a rosary to the inside of the skirt somewhere up in the fluff out of the way, and I used the rosary my grandmother had on her wedding day. Of course, that only works if you're Christian, but you could always see if someone has something like that in your family, not just your mother.

As for the something blue, I just did a post on my blog about all the different ways I've seen it done at weddings in the past few years. I've seen toenails (like mentioned above), custom hair pins, broaches, jewelry, shoes, underwear... one bride bought clear blue crystal beads from the craft store and put them on the ends of the bobby pins her hairstylist used to 1. hide the pins and 2. Add the blue with a bit of bling. Cost her only about $2 for the beads, and the looked like expensive "bridal" bobby pins.

I did: my great-grandmother's hankerchief that I carried as my something old - we had the same birthday.

a peacock feather hair clippy thing hid in my hair from my bff as my something borrowed.

my dress and everything was new

my garter and my jewelry were all blue.

Where did that all start does anyone know? Haha and how old does something have to be to be considered old? My dress is new, my ring is a sapphire so I've got my blue, I'm hoping to borrow my grandmother's pearls (although I'm wearing a halter dress - that can work right, or no necklace?) But old... And "traditionally" are all of these things supposed to be their own? For example, can you combine earrings for new and borrowed or are you supposed to have one thing for each? I'm very curious about this now... on to research!

I thought something borrowed has to be something that you return. The lace isn't something you will return so is it technically borrowed? Just asking

This is some stuff I found:

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. "Something old" symbolizes continuity with the bride's family and the past. "Something new" means optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead. "Something borrowed" is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, "Marry in blue, lover be true."

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represents wealth and financial security. It may date back to a Scottish custom of a groom putting a silver coin under his foot for good luck. For optimum fortune, the sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a dime or a copper penny is sometimes substituted, and many companies sell keepsake sixpences for weddings.

Very informative, thanks!! I've always heard borrowed, blue, new, old... first time I've heard about the silver sixpence... interesting, although I'm sure it's probably b/c the people I've heard it from didn't use a silver sixpence
