So bummed about DJ I wanted!

Kara, on April 30, 2012 at 11:37 AM Posted in Planning 0 29

So last year we went to a bridal expo that this DJ was hosting. We had gone to his booth but didnt get a chance to speak w him personally but we loved his personality on stage! When I got home I looked over his prices and almost died when I saw what he charges. I was looking at (MAX) paying half the price he wanted. Im not looking anything special just the basics for 5 hrs of music. I was bummed, got over it. Got distracted w the baby news. Then started working on the wedding again. Came across his website and saw he had a promo going. The price was down to what I was willing to max out. I got so excited!!! Told FH to get in touch right away and get it going since it ends today. Well he finally talked to him and he has other djs that work under him and for that price you get one of them. He doesnt leave the house for under $2500. Are you kidding me?!?! I mean I think he would of made a great vendor to our current list. But I will not pay that for a personality. What are you paying?

We had a family friend that was wanting to DJ our wedding, he DJs on the side for his church, and he only wanted $100. I just don't know if he would be a good fit for our wedding. The DJ I'm looking at is $675 and that includes ceremoney and 6 hours of reception. He is pretty inexpensive for my area.

Our DJ usually charges $1,000, but he is doing our wedding for $900 since it's a Sunday. He is just a one man shop, so he is less expensive than many of the entertainment companies we looked into.

    Good luck!

This probably not what you want to hear but our DJ is free. He has this rapping/singing thing he does and the group he is in is DJing for us for free. But 2500.00 is never worth a DJ for 5 hours or 10 its just music playing offline. For that price I could take the time to download all the music I want and DJ for myself. LOL

Sorry about your DJ dilemma Smiley sad

We are paying $1000... 6 hour reception... and he is bringing in extra sound equipment due to the size of the hall and also including 20 uplights around the entire room... He's a really good DJ too!

I think his price is fair for our region and what he provides. He was the DJ at my cousins wedding last year and we really liked him! Very energetic and kept the dance floor going!

    Its just crazy! for

    $1200 we would get

    5hrs

    1MC/1DJ/VD

with what we would have to pay to have him come out is this package

    $2500

    6 Hour

    1 MC and 1 DJ/VJ

    Up-lighting (up to 10 fixtures)

    2 Plasma Screens

    Photo Montage

    Custom First Dance

Ceremony System (If at reception hall)

but we dont need all that so where suppose to be willing to pay $2500 and just get what we need? thats crazy!

Waaay too much money. My DJ is charging $700.00 and that's a lot for me. I use to live in Miami and the hood Dj's charge $25.00 per hour. But it is a wedding so I don't mind paying that. $2500.00 I would have dropped the phone. And that's for one of his entourage.

Ours is $870. We got $325 worth of uplights as well, so $545 for for just the DJ. That includes MC/DJ for 5 hours, dance floor lights, and a mic for speeches.

You loved him because he's fabulous, and that is why he charges what he does. You can find a dj in any market for 250.00. Will they do what he does? No. Any good DJ will tell you that your five hours of music will take many more hours to arrange; you meet, you talk, they build a playlist, they set up equipment (and bring backup), they act as the concierge for your whole evening; it's lotsa hours. Anyone, almost, can buy equipment and show up, but trust me, I have witnessed the worst disasters possible with cheap DJ's, including those who don't bother to show up at all.

The bottom line is that when you want a specific product; a car, a house, a dj, a dress; it's not up to you to set the price, it's up to the seller. Whether you buy it or not is up to you, but contrary to popular belief, vendors don't set their prices without knowing what they are worth.

The thing that most people don't understand is that entertainment is a huge part of your wedding....yes $2500 is a lot but it also depends on that persons experience and if he parts of a company they are obviously going to charge more....my DJ is $1800 (and that's with a little discount) I told the company my budget was $1800 and they agreed and at first I thought it was really expensive but then I realized he is one of the best DJ's that the company offers and he's done parties at my venue so many times so he's already familiar with the venue and my wedding coordinator highly recommended him....I called around to other entertainment companies and they were charging higher than that so I calmed down....yeah I could've gone somewhere cheaper but I wanted to feel comfortable that I wouldn't have to worry about the entertainment the day of my wedding and just get down and dance

That is expensive, but we hired our DJ and MC separately and it comes close to your amount.

I agree with Celia. There are buyers out there!

The public thinks that many wedding DJs all do the same thing and at the same level of proficiency. Based on what they've seen, they don't expect much. That’s why they want to pay the average price or “going rate”. And for that reason, most wedding DJ services charge about the same price, varying by only a few hundred dollars.

In many instances, brides and grooms don't think the entertainment is very important because they haven't seen a DJ that can really deliver quality entertainment. So they get the cheapest DJ that can play the best music. Sometimes they forgo having a DJ and instead use an iPod or no entertainment whatsoever.

The only reason to pay more for something - anything - is because you are getting more/better. Dinner, cars, real estate, entertainment, anything.

People will buy a BMW over a Hyundai because of quality - they are getting a better car. Not everyone will afford a BMW, granted, but they still recognize it as a better car that they would prefer to have. Generally speaking, people want better stuff.

DJ services are different than cars - different in your favor (as a DJ). DJs are hired only for special events and compared to other related expenses, are not prohibitive. Unlike a BMW, a DJ service is not the most expensive thing they’ll buy for their wedding. ~Mark Ferrell. Ladies the DJ you hire will be the one who represents you as your host, your spokesperson (not just your DJ) on one of the biggest days for your life. Your DJ will determined whether or not your reception is a hit or miss. Your reception is the entertainment part of your wedding, it's what drives it. Nothing else drives your reception. If you believe $2,500 for a wedding DJ/MC is way too much, think about this, Ryan Seacrest gets 15 million per year just to host (MC) American Idol. Why?
