Smoking?

Beth, on March 12, 2013 at 6:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

I didn't even think about this until last night. I know smoking will not be allowed inside my venue but I am assuming it is allowed outside of the building (I need to check with my venue, actually). Personally I would prefer no one smoke, but my dad and nana are chain smokers and will find a place to smoke regardless of the rules. I don't want the smoke around me because it is a big migraine trigger for me, so I would almost rather create a designated area for smokers that keeps them away from me. lol. Anyone else think about this?

I'm almost positive none of our guests smoke (unless it's a SO that we don't know all that well), but the vanue allows smoking on the balcony.

One of the venues that I was looking at actually had in the contract that there was NO smoking on their property and that included the parking lot and if cigarette butts were to be found out in the parking lot, that we would be charged a clean up fee!! That seemed a bit overboard!

We didn't end up using a different venue... not for that reason, but it did worry me because I know that there were a few smokers attending...

A lot of my guests smoke including FH, when we went on a tour of our venue they already have a designated smoking spot outside the building so I didn't have to worry about any of that!

Out of the 200 guests, I think the bulk don't smoke. I have one uncle who smokes but he has medical issues and is on oxygen most of the time these days. Other than him, I am trying to think about all the big family gatherings and I don't remember any smoking at all. You are totally right, it isn't something I even gave thought to. I quite smoking nearly 14 years ago.

FH's dad smokes like a chimney. We're telling him he can smoke outside, AWAY from the reception.

Smoking disgusts me and the smoke gives me a giant headache as well.

Not being considerate of guests is my big wedding pet peeve, but this is one accommodation I refuse to go out of my way to make. If there's nowhere to smoke (and it'd better not be anywhere near me, like Beth and FutureMrsW it's a huge migraine trigger for me) and someone absolutely cannot go 4-5 hours without a cigarette, that's not my problem.

We were waiting for a table at a restaurant the other night and the guy behind us reeked of smoke. I could actually feel that little "migraine nerve" start twitching just from that. And last night my FH came home from a friends house - whenever he comes home from there he reeks of smoke and he doesn't even smoke. I couldn't smell it because I have a cold but I still felt that nerve acting up.

Both of my parents smoked when I was a kid, in the house, around us, everywhere, and I wonder why I got horrible, awful migraines since I was 12 that suddenly went away when I moved out.

Our venue does not allow smoking either. We are providing seating outside also.

Well we are having a barbaque in my brother's backyard so i dont know how i would address this. but if we were doing a venue i wouldnt have to worry because Ohio is a no smoking state.you are allowed to smoke in your home or car but have to be at least 30 feet away from buildings.

You can't smoke inside in DE either, and are supposed to be away from the building. That doesn't mean my dad will listen. lol. That's why I want a designated area. I know he will just throw his butts on the ground and I hate that.

A lot of my FH's friends smoke, unfortunately, though he doesn't. Our venue has a patio area just outside the dining room, so I'm sure there will be a group who are outside the whole night and miss everything happening inside. Their loss.

Oh Hell no.... there will be no smoking near me. I'm pretty sure my venue doesn't allow it anyway. If someone wants to kill themselves during my wedding, they can do it in their car in the parking lot. Their loss, like Alisa said.

My venue didn't have a patio on the floor that my reception was on so all of the smokers had to go down one floor to smoke. We had about 10-20 smokers and they would all go take smoke breaks at the same time. They were noticeably absent from parts of the reception and it was kind of annoying but I didn't let it get me down.

Our wedding was at a country club, with lots of outdoor patio space and a specific area at the entrance for people to smoke. Our DJ let people know about this at the start of dinner. We needed to have places for people to smoke as both my mom and MIL smoke, as well as some family friends and the guys enjoyed a cigar during the reception; including DH, groomsmen and some other friends. No body had an issue with the smoking and everyone was very accommodating to smokers and non-smokers.

98% of places will have an area to smoke outside with some sort of butt depot.. Ive actually never been to a venue or a place that doesn't have smoker depots/designated area. Ever. I wouldnt worry about your smokers..

I would check with the venue, Beth. Ours "allowed" smoking in designated areas (outside of course) with permission PRIOR to the event. It was a completely non smoking establishment (in Vegas) and they would have charged me if they'd found cigarette butts after the fact. Glad I asked b/c we had quite a few smokers and a lot of "smoke when they drink" types.

Definitely find out from your venue what the rules are. My ex-venue (heehee that's funny to say) didnt allow smoking anywhere in the park, you have to go to the parkinglot, which is a ways off from the actual venue. Not fun when you want to stay where the party is.

My current venue allows right on the patio, right outside the bldg. Makes for ease of smoking guests to still be in the reception area.

FH is a smoker, so this is something I had to make sure about. I didnt want him smoking at first, but I know his nerves are gonna be everywhere, so it's a nerve-calmer for him to smoke. Half his family smokes too. Ugh I think it's disgusting, but what can ya do?
