Small wedding cake plus cupcakes?

Liz, on March 14, 2017 at 3:27 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 65

Has anyone ever done a wedding cake plus cupcakes? To cut down on cost, we are looking to do a smaller wedding cake plus cupcakes from two different vendors. I haven't given it much thought about how to decorate the cake table so I'm kind of looking for suggestions. I know its "non-traditional" but its more do-able for our budget. Thoughts?

Just a head's up, cupcakes are not that much cheaper than cake. They require more attention to individually frost/decorate. We were going to do cupcakes too, partly to cut down on cost, but decided to change that once we found out the price wouldn't really be any different. We're actually doing a sort of dessert bar instead, with cheesecake for ourselves (and possible others, so we're not the only ones with that option).

Sure why not.. We're doing a small tiered wedding cake and then a couple of different single cakes(carrot, red velvet, chocolate etc..) It's such a money-saver and I like having choices. Plus I'm decorating the tiered cake myself.

I did a small cake and a sheet cake for the guests for that reason.

We thought about doing a small cake for us to cut and then having a large sheet cake in the back to cut costs and be easier to serve. Thankfully the cake was a lot cheaper than I thought.

We're doing the same thing. It's included from the venue, so not sure about the cost difference between the two options. We're going to have a cupcake stand, and then the small cake on top so that we have something to cut!

I'd check w the baker but usually you can do a small cake, just for cutting purposes and then they'll do a sheet cake for you for guests.

Personally, I don't like the idea. I don't like cupcakes and the theory behind having a cake at all is that your guests share a piece of cake with you.

    But it's your wedding.

You can also do a sheet cake in the back.

We are doing all cupcakes but then again we are not for tradition. I just liked that we could choose literally as many flavors as we wanted (we ended up sticking with 4).

if you're a stickler for tradition have a fake cake with just the bottom or top layer being actual cake and have a sheet cake in the back. It will give you the traditional feel, look really pretty, and still feed your guests.

We're doing that, but bringing cupcakes out at a later time when we have the 'hot cocoa bar' ready to go.

I'm doing a small cake with cupcakes. I'll be doing a cupcake tower, and my florist is going to leave some extra flowers for the baker to decorate it with. I'll also have the groom's cake on the table. I know most people use that for the rehearsal dinner, but FH wants it at the actual wedding, which is no biggie to me.

I like the idea. We're doing a small one tier cheesecake (we don't like regular cake) and then having mini cheesecake bites for guests. Its not cheaper, but that's what we wanted.

I'm not a fan when the slicing cake is from 1 bakery and the cupcakes are from another (usually a grocery store or Costco). It smacks of a teired reception....

There's a place near us that makes bundt cakes. It's called "Nothing Bundt Cakes". I think they're a chain. We are going to do their 2 tier bundt and then order "bundtinis" so that everyone can have their own, and we can have multiple flavors. The price comes out a little less than $1/person. Since our wedding is going to be somewhere around 150 people, I feel like it's a better choice than a $300 cake. We'll freeze the top tier of the bundt, cut the second tier, and then serve the "bundtinis". Pretty similar to the cupcake idea! Definitely something I would suggest people who want cupcakes to look into.

We are doing a 75-person cake and a 50-person sheet cake in order to keep costs down. For both, our bill is less than $500 and we are having 3 different flavors of cake. Just something to consider.

We have one bakery making us our cutting cake and then making replica cupcakes of the exact flavor of our cake plus a few different flavors. We just liked the idea of this because we loved so many different flavors and didn't want to choose just one cake flavor. Our cake has a raspberry filling and we figured someone there will hate raspberry and love chocolate so cupcakes were a way for us to provide that. I don't think its a huge deal and in the grand scheme of "tacky" wedding things you COULD do -- I wouldn't worry about this at all Smiley smile

PS. The cupcakes actually ended up costing us more. But we didn't mind because of the reason I gave.

We're doing the same thing. All of ours will be from the same baker though. They specialize in cupcakes so we're doing a small cake for cutting and then getting an assortment of cupcake flavors.
