Small wedding cake plus cupcakes?

Has anyone ever done a wedding cake plus cupcakes? To cut down on cost, we are looking to do a smaller wedding cake plus cupcakes from two different vendors. I haven't given it much thought about how to decorate the cake table so I'm kind of looking for suggestions. I know its "non-traditional" but...

Yep. That's what we are doing. It also allowed us to have more flavor options for our guests.

Our wedding is board game "themed" so we are sprinkling dice on the cake table and we are making signs out of scrabble letters identifying which flavor is which.

Not sure if you'll really save on cost the only thing I would like about the cupcake idea is that you could do a variety of flavors

I think doing a little cake for you, then cupcakes is fine. I would however try to meet with your two different vendors at the same time - to make your look more cohesive and so they sort of "match".

We're doing 3 assorted cake pops, mini/personal pineapple upside down cakes, cupcakes choc and vanilla with shotglass frosting and a cake for us to cut. This is our inspiration pic off of Pinterest. However, our dessert assortment was not cheap.

Cupcakes tend to be a bit more than a cake as they take more time.

@Betsy - We're hoping to do the same thing! I love Nothing Bundt Cakes. Their cakes taste amazing and the bundtinis are so cute. They are also super affordable compared to other bakeries. I recommend it to anyone if they have one in their area.

@Leah Yes! They are two different cake shops but very similar in style. I've looked into the cost and it is much, much cheaper doing it this way. Just wanted input on the "look" of having a smaller cake with cupcakes since it's not traditional.

I've been to two weddings where they did the same thing and we plan to as well. My SIL said the cupcakes were cheaper per serving than sheet cake from her bakery. And I've seen gorgeous tier cakes start to slump partway through receptions (mostly, I think, due to heat at a summer wedding). My only reservation is that people tend to grab the cupcakes with their dinner (at buffet style receptions) and that drives me NUTS. Maybe that's just the control freak in me, but with traditional cakes guests wait until the cake cutting to have dessert, and I feel the same should apply to cupcakes, cookies, whatever. But yes, we will save money by doing cupcakes.

We are doing both...the cupcakes we are having are more for people with allergies, but also for people that would rather have a cupcake than cake. We will have a gluten-free, dairy free, and a peanut free option for those that can't enjoy our cake.

We're doing cupcakes and she's throwing in a small 2 tier for us to cut for photos. I wanted variety and then I couldn't decide so we ended up with 4 flavors. The cake will probably just be white and simply frosted. I figure it won't be the center of attention so no need for it to be extravagant. Haven't figured out the layout yet either. ETA spelling.

We are toying with the idea of two tiered cake and a sheet cake in the back. Plus our venue gives us a dessert bar with cheesecakes, brownies and other little desserts for those who do not like cake right in the package

I'm doing the same thing. I found a little tower thing on pinterest for inspiration and that's how I will organize the cake table. My wedding is rustic barn so I will just be doing pallet style wood instead of the white. It's easy to find on pinterest if you just type small cake and cupcakes wedding and then you could even type your style in and tons of images will come up.

We did that. Our cut cake was on our sweetheart table and the mini cupcakes and pies were on the dessert table.

It doesn't go against etiquette. Personally, I think cupcakes are bullshit. They're messy. If you eat them like cake, just have cake. I would be pissed watching you eat gourmet cake and I'm eating a cheapass cupcake.

I wouldn't side-eye you but I do not like cupcakes.
